I’m not sure, but my guess is that it’s something attached to the wires to keep the cans on. Perhaps little orange flags that might be used to mark waterlines or cables in yards or something. You can sort of see one sticking out on the upper left hand side of the picture. That would be my guess.
The orange pin flags that are stuffed inside the cans weren’t necessarily stolen. They can be purchased cheaply at industrial hardware stores. All of the flags used for this project appear to be new because all the metal rods are unbent. It’s a brilliantly simply way of hanging the cans.
I bet that the cat won’t try to climb that tree more than once!
