I don’t know the full story behind this but I guess Ah-nuld is getting a lot of flack for this because it would have been a helpful bill for San Francisco but he nixed it this way because:
“Earlier this month, the Republican governor crashed a San Francisco Democratic Party fund-raiser, where he was booed by Democrats still upset at the spending cuts he pushed this year. One attendee, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, yelled “You lie!” at him, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Then, Ammiano, a former standup comedian who is famous in San Francisco for his championing of liberal causes and gay rights, walked out on the speech, shouting a vulgarity.” [CTRL+C’d from the wall street Journal]
(The vulgarity seems to have been something to the effect of: “You can kiss my gay ass.”)
So Arnie gets the heat for tanking the bill out of spite and being a bad governor because of it. While I honestly have no idea if he’s a good governor in general or not (I don’t pay any attention to CA politics, usually) I think it’s complete BS that he gets the heat for this one.
Does anyone else think this one is (almost) completely Ammiano’s fault? He’s an Assemblyman, his job is to represent his people, if he’d rather get the laugh than play nice, HE’S NOT DOING HIS JOB. He just screwed his entire city for a laugh.
Politicians play nice, that’s their job. They make friends so they can ask for favors for their people. If I needed to ask my boss for a favor, I wouldn’t start by telling him to kiss my ass.
I can completely understand the frustration with the legislature. California politics has gotten so far out of hand, with no reform happening whatsoever, only stupid laws being passed and written. The “budget solution” this year that the legislature came up with was taking money away from county and local governments, instead of controlling spending on the state level for once.
Arnold has actually been a good state governor. California voters usually for democrats by default, and california politics is corrupt. The GOP in the legislature (all dozen of them) are against tax hikes, and the Dems are all for higher spending.
And worst of all, freedoms are being curtailed. We can’t get the best Hi-Def TVs anymore here, because a law passed that they can’t take up more than x electricity. There’s a city where it’s illegal to smoke (cigarettes) in your own home now. Why? Because politicians in the legislature need to pass laws to tell you what to do, because they know better than you.
