We get spam

B&P is the lucky recipient of about 200–400 spam emails a day.  They keep trying to get sneakier and sneakier.  One of their tactics is to copy a regular commenter’s recent comment and add the line “I forgot to tell you I love the blog” or something similar.  Most of the time I catch that quickly because the new comment doesn’t have the avatar of the regular reader and just looking at the link they provide is usually the tell–all.  Here’s an example:

Spam

A quick glance might tell me that this comment from B&P reader ”Infidel” accidentally went to the spam filter.  But when I look at the link… well, with Infidel you can never be sure.  But I can also see the commenter’s email address (which you guys can’t) and I know that’s not our Infidel’s email address.

Sometimes I’ll scan through the spam folder but sometimes I just delete it.  I couldn’t sleep last night so I was here until 2 am this morning.  At that time I deleted 148 spam emails.  This morning when I logged on I had 155 spam emails.  I just happened to notice this one so I thought I’d share it with you.  I’m not going to scan the entire list.  I’ll delete them.

So, just in case you have a legitimate comment and you don’t see it after a day or so, it probably got thrown out with the spam.  That doesn’t happen very often because the spam filtering software does a very good job.  But, occasionally one or two will slip by.

  1. Infi,
They’ve done that to a lot of the regular commenters. I just thought it was funny when they used yours for that particular website. I’d been thinking about making a post about how the spammers try to get a post through, and when I saw that one I knew I had to do it.
