Wednesday Open Mic

MicGoing out for breakfast this morning and then driving up to Tampa to pick up my brother who’s coming in to surprise my aunt.

Talk about whatever you want.   You’re all in charge!

I’ll post more this evening.

  1. Thanks for thinking of me Bitsy. The beast has already stolen second base from me but I’m making sure that it doesn’t wipe-out home base. It’s ok though, short stop is grabbing it by it’s foul balls before it slides into 3rd. Batter OUT!!!

  2. Hmmmm. Well, Michael Crabtree reached an agreement with the 49ers and Braylon Edwards was traded to the Jets. Two potential playoff teams just added stud receivers….any other sports fans in here?

  3. My city (buffalo) is depopulating. I invite all environmentalists to come here and enjoy it. See the ever growing rotting ghetto.Every time I drive through an abandoned block, or a crumbling factory I think of the greens and there leader Gore, I hope they enjoy the world they claim they want.

  4. Our power company, First Energy of Ohio, is going to deliver two compact florescent lightbulbs (made in China, and containing Chinese mercury) to each and every one of the 2-million homes in their service area, then add 60¢ to our utility bills until they’ve charged us $21.60 for the two bulbs delivered to us unsolicited. There is no opt out program, and you can’t refuse delivery. If you refuse to pay the 60¢, you will be threatened with having your electric power cut off.

You can buy these bulbs in stores for $10 for a 4-pack. They have mercury in them and if they break, you have a major situation on your hands. Hopefully there are no pets, infants, or humans in your house. (When mercury is spilled in a classroom, the entire school is evacuated and closed for a decontamination.)

They say they have to do this or raise rates to cover their costs because we’ve been conserving so much we’re using less power. But these bulbs will use even less power, so I imagine we’ll have to pay even more for the power we’re not using. Again.

I wonder when Walmart or Sears can start delivering products we don’t want to our homes and charge us anyway. What a country.

  5. DJ – There are 3 (three) storage facilities for mercury in the U.S. One of them is N.E. Ohio – what’s a few droplets more??

  6. Julie – A lot of blogs are listing the street addresses for First Energy offices and facilities…There could be a lot of mercury cleanups happening around the area every morning for awhile. Citizen activism seems about to break out…

  7. Isiah – I know what you mean! I moved out of Bflo 13 years ago. It is so sad seeing how the town has been ruined. My neighborhood (Hewitt Ave, off of Bailey) was a great neighborhood when we moved in (1984) but was becoming more and more ghetto each year we were there. The city was truly killed by government overregulation driving businesses out of state or even out of country. It still saddens me to see such a noble city turned to rubble by government interference.

  8. DJ – This lightbulb crap is truly only the beginning of the great environmental nightmare! The environmentalists are pushing these lightbulbs, but I guarantee you that in 10 years they will be indignant that we irresponsible Americans are polluting our groundwater with mercury from our unquenchable thirst for cheap electricity. These same “saviors of the planet”, who demand hybrid and electric cars, will in another 20 years be condemning us for our electric automobiles which are again polluting the landscape with lead from these infernal batteries which they run on. These idiots cannot see beyond their noses and will subject us to the unintended consequences of their “benificent actions”. Enough of this insane environmentalism based on junk science and propaganda! Wake up America!

  9. (Another)Scott – All my life I’ve been taught about the dangers of mercury…just google “mercury school spill”. Now, they’re forcing me to have little glass containers of mercury in every room in my house…and where I work, and where I shop, and in schools…

And you’re right…They’re telling us these things have a life of 5-10 years…wait till millions of these things start hitting the landfills, rivers, and aquifers.

Check this out…EACH bulb contains “about 5 milligrams, or barely enough to cover the tip of a pen — but that is enough to contaminate up to 6,000 gallons of water beyond safe drinking levels, extrapolated from Stanford University research on mercury.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23694819/ And our utility is going to leave 4 million of these on our doorsteps.

  10. Sad but true DJ. Much (dare I say most?) of today’s environmentalism based on junk science and propaganda! People are so afraid that they will be labled as someone who is irresponsibly destroying the planet for cheap energy that they are willing to give up basic freedoms just so they won’t be called names. We are allowing people to extort us for inferior services that we don’t need at prices that are unreasonable. Our freedoms are being taken away bit by bit by those who are only trying to protect Us from Ourselves! This is what is known as soft tyranny: It’s tyranny for your own good.

  11. Yay for CFLs! Now my daughter’s Easy Bake Oven never gets too hot to touch and only costs pennies to use. But for some reason it takes days to bake a cake and the mercury gives everything a funny taste.

  12. My dad used to have a jar of mercury he got from work (I think it was when he did printing but I don’t know why you need mercury for that?) and he used to tip some in to the lid of the jar and let us play with it using a match stick. I used to poke at it and push it around. It is amazing stuff. Maybe not a kids toy. Parenting Fail! Just add it to the list!

Infi – It turned out my early night (12:30am) turned into a late night (3:00am) as the baby kept squawking every time I went to bed! She is getting about 4 teeth at once! Poor baby.

  13. That’s funny DJ! I used to save the mercury from our broken thermometers (yes, they used mercury back in the 19th century) and push it around WITH MY FINGERS!! Boy were we stupid back then! I can just hear Paul in Boca now: “Maybe that’s why you are a conservative”! Ha! I beat you to it!

  14. Well I work at a veterinarian clinic and the thermometers we use are STILL mercury because the doctor is old school and doesn’t care for the ones that take 5secs to read. Instead we have to hold it in place for 30secs! That’s a long time when the animal wants nothing to do with the foreign thing in it’s behind! So needless to say, when the animal moves around too much they can fall out and break. It just looks so neat not to touch! lol!

  15. How about that Stimulus money to help the economy recover?…it’s going for turtle tunnels in Calif., airports that have no commercial flights, the Clinton Library, handouts to homeless in Detroit, child support enforcement, increased payments to disabled and elderly, afterschool meals for children, broadband access for rural areas… it goes on and on.

Way to get the economy up and running! http://dallas.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/2009/09/28/daily48.html

  16. Hey DJ. One of my friends just gave me a great idea. You should get a group of about 100 people together, go down to the First energy of Ohio offices to “return” your bulbs and “accidentally” drop them in their lobby. Maybe this would call attention to their foolishness.

  17. (A)S – Already being suggested on many blogs. There will be a lot of suddenly clumsy people on the steps of FE offices, the Statehouse, PUCO offices, and any of our elected arseholes that allowed this.

Breaking News: Ohioans flooded media, politicians, First Energy and PUCO phones and websites on Wednesday and First Energy has said they will hold off until this sick scam can be investigated….By the politicians, of course. In the meantime, there’s a warehouse with 4 million Chinese mercury light bulbs in it somewhere…What do you think the chances of these things going back to China are? Correct…Slim and None, and Slim just rode out of town. I guarantee these will be on our doorsteps before the end of the year.

I need to know what Al Gore’s position on mercury pollution of the aquifer and mercury poisoning is.

  18. News flash. Those damn CFL’s don’t last any longer than incadescent bulbs. I replaced a lot of bulbs in my home and within six months, they were failing. So much for saving money!
I remember playing with mercury from a broken thermometer when I was a kid. It was neat to watch it run aound in the palm of my hand. Looks like I’m doomed to die at a young age. Oh, wait. I’m 64 now and still going strong.

  19. Breaking News again…First Energy says phuck the public, the environment, and logic. Program is still on. I guess any corporation can now deliver something you don’t want, without your permission, containing hazardous materials, and charge you 9 times it’s value and threaten you if you don’t pay. Good luck, citizens.

  20. @ (Another Scott)

Hewitt Ave was at some point a decent neighbourhood? Really? Its on the wrong side of main st

  21. Isiah – That was way back in the late ’80s. I moved into my house in 1987 and it was still mostly families and nice old people. By 1996 when I moved here to Vegas, the area was well on it’s way down the toilet. The principal of the local elementary school (PS 87 I think) was given kudos because her big accomplishment was closing down the crack house across the street from the school. Too bad! it used to be a nice (poor, but nice) neighborhood.
