  1. The head of the Chicago Organizing Committee said at a press conference that he was not going to point fingers at anyone, then immediately blamed the U.S. Olympic Committee for the failure. He just doesn’t get it – The Navy Pier vs. Copacabana Beach, Polka vs. Samba, now you tell me who the Euroweenies would vote for.
On a positive note, no Chicago politicians will be going to jail for fraud or corruption.

  2. Richard–well, it is a relatively safe bet that no Chicago politicians will go to jail for the failed Olympic bid; for everything else, I would not make a bet.

I also like how the Chicago Organizing Committee has blamed all kinds of things (always fun to watch on the local news), but not really hit some real issues that would keep the Olympics out of Chicago: corruption, not enough money to fund it, the violence in Chicago, and probably a few other things I am missing.

  3. The United States has hosted four Summer Olympics Games already, more than any other nation. Maybe the Olympic committee just thought it would be nice to let another nation have its time in the sun.

  4. Does anyone know what movie has this scene in it? I’ve been wanting to watch the real thing to see what is really going on in that room for a long time but I don’t know what movie this is.

has a link to the amazon page for the movie if you want a copy.

el kabong, i would argue north america hasn’t had it’s share of olympics host sites… what is it, like 6 total summer games, and just 2 since 1932? Europe has hosted 16+? comparative populations and competing athletes, hard to see a lot of bias there.

  6. hi everyone,

@kelly: you might be right that compared to the population and number of athletes the US didn’t host enough summer games. true, true.
    but.
The committee gives the right to host the games to a nation. and while the US is one really big nation, (to prove a point I choose:) Europe is not. We have 50 countries = 50 nations here, and of course every one thinks that they deserve to host the games as much as anyone out there. and the same is for every continent, believe me. just for the record: US (1 nation) with 6 games compared to Europe (~50 nations) with 16 games. doesn’t sound fair, right? 🙂

my point is: please stop looking at other areas of the world as nations, because they are not. they are different countries with different culture and most of the time with different language.
And yes, I come from a _country_ with about that many inhabitants like the city of New York. And we never hosted a summer game before, and we would love to do it once too. 🙂
(and sorry for my English, I’m still learning…)
