I enjoy your site and I can deal with the political humor. Lately tho, your postings have been propagating misconceptions if not outright lies. While I certainly understand you aren’t a news forum and you don’t adhere to any standards when it comes to facts, I would hope you would have the discretion to acknowledge how some people lack the ability to know better. Perhaps you can attempt to balance matters by posting a segment from the Daily Show or the Colbert Report.
By the way, because some people may respond to this insisting the above video is accurate, the fact is, a single payer system has never been in the equation for the bill presently in question. And perhaps these same people might want to talk to some victims of health insurance companies and see how health care was rationed to them or their family members.
Better yet, before they even reply to any of the above, they should answer this question first: What’s more important–you and your family’s health or the insurance company getting billions more profit?
Oh, gawd…he’s gonna pull the plug on Grandma, isn’t he.
This is pleasant, and clever. But it’s hard to see what the point is. As great as it would be if we could have a single payer health care system–as much as the screamers deny it, it’s simply a fact that we pay way more for considerably less quality health care than any industrialized country that has a single payer system–that’s not what Obama is asking congress to come up with. So the video is based on a completely false notion. But then, everything else the anti-reform crowd is saying is false, too, so I guess that’s no surprise.
Ray,
I posted this video (and most others I post) because I see the humor in it. I don’t stand up and say anything you find here is factual. As many of my readers have pointed me in the direction of Snopes.com or other sites to challenge something I post. I’m not against Obama at all, I just saw the humor in this piece. I receive a lot of anti-Obama stuff and I won’t post it if I feel it’s just hateful or politically based.
And, I have posted Daily Show clips on here in the past. Jon Stewart is great and I like the Colbert Report.
And it is balancing out now that the administration has changed. It ‘seemed’ the other way for the years previous. Ray–News Flash: Whoever happens to be in the White House is the target of humor. I would think that anyone would have figured that out after the 8 Bush years and the 8 Clinton years. If you don’t like humor directed against any current president, you’re in for a long bumpy ride, because it’s gonna be getting worse quickly. (And Ray…don’t forget to talk to some victims of gov’t health care at your nearest VA hospital.)
“Less quality health care than any other industrialized country”? BS! Get a grip, Ray, Jonco always plays fair! I’ve seen stuff from both sides here, and that’s why I come here EVERY DAY! It’s humor–get over it!!
MCW. First of all, I see the humor: as I said, it’s clever. But this also is unmistakeably false propaganda, based on one of the major and widely repeated lies of conservatives and other dupes of the insurance companies. And, yes, the World Health Organization ranks the U.S. 37th in the overall quality of the health care its citizens receive, behind all the industrialized nations that have a single payer system. So I do, in fact, have a grip on the realities we face and the urgent need for reform. You won’t hear this on Fox News, because when they are not busy repeating the health care misinformation and talking points fed to them by Republicans, they are misinforming their listeners about climate change or creation science. Keep your eyes closed if you like, but yelling neither convinces anyone nor makes your self-delusions any truer.
I cant believe people want the Government to run health care, name one thing they have done that turned out right ,those dumb bastards cant even run a damn car program ,wake up people once this health care is passed we are fuc*ed more than we already are
Amen, infidel. Wait, did I really say that? Just sounds strange. Does anyone remember all of the news stories a few years back about wounded veterans living in horrid conditions at VA facilities? That’s our government at work for ya’!
‘Cash for clunkers’ went broke in 9 days. It’s a fact. Facts are pesky things, no?
MCW…it not only went broke, it was understaffed by incompetent people who didn’t have a clue what they were doing, and was plagued with computer crashes and jammed phone lines and tons and tons of paperwork. Dealers haven’t been reimbursed for their outlay…some have millions & millions of dollars out, waiting for the govt (as usual) to get money back to them. Some dealers around here have pulled out of the program early because it couldn’t deliver what it promised.
And eight of the top 10 selling vehicles during the program were Asian. I wonder how that big chunk of that $3 billion leaving the country is going to help the American economy. And watch car sales for the next few months…most of the people that Clunked in were going to buy a new car anyway…but now they’ve been incentivised to hurry up and trade in an American car and buy foreign.
Another bureaucratic fiasco brought to you by the US Government.
Cash for clunkers program. Some of those clunkers should/could have gone to help some people get off welfare.
I just got notice my Aetna insurance is going up by 29.5% witch I can’t afford along with many others. you idiots who thinks reform shouldn’t happen are just wrong. Insurance companies screw everyone whenever they want and get away with it. Something has to be done.
One thing the government does right. Hmmm, Medicare? One reason so many folks are against health care reform is that they are terrified it will affect their precious Medicare. It was tough passing that bill in 1964 because of the same factors that are in play now. Single-payer health care would essentially cover everyone under Medicare, expanded to cover more if they do it like other countries. Too bad it will never happen. Too much profit at stake.
Government programs that work well enough that a high majority of Americans would never think of giving up: National Highway System, the Military, the National Park System, the Coast Guard, the Postal Service, the National Forests, the USFDA, the National Institutes of Health, Medicare, etc, etc, etc., and down at the state and local level, police and fire departments, social services, etc, etc, etc
Here’s something that should make any conservative’s head explode: the government-run French health care system, which costs about half per person as ours, is the best in the world. Yes, that’s right wingnuts, the best health care system in the world is run by the French government.
But the argument is moot in the current national discussion because, and let me be clear just in case some conservative somewhere is actually still capable of listening, A GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS NOT UNDER CONSIDERATION! Got that? None of the current proposals in congress propose a govt-run system. So ranting against govt-run health care is beside the point.
Now if you want to get seriously outraged about something, take a look at the viciously expensive and unfair system we currently have, remember that 30% of those the already high premiums you pay (if you are lucky enough to have insurance) line the pockets of the insurance companies, remember that those premiums will double in the next ten years as the list of services covered gets smaller and smaller, remember that a higher and higher percentage of our national budget will go towards health care until there’s no money for anything else, and then look at all the conservatives running around lying about the seriousness of the problem and demonizing the first man to come along in a long time with the vision and courage to try to address the problem. Now that’s truly outrageous!
if the French plan is soo good then why doesnt everybody go there, like the people in Canada come here
Obama says he is IN FAVOR OF THE SINGLE PAYER HEALTH CARE SYSTEM..
In his own words..
Pay attention.
You can reply it several times if that helps.
there’s a republican solution for you – those of us who can’t afford health care go to another country while the few privilege stay comfortably in America.
you will find there are lot of”privileged few” here, we have insurance because we get out and work,we dont sit around and expect the Government to do it for us
there are many people who work and can’t afford it
Infi, We got out and worked too, but our insurance kept going up and up. It went from $400 a month to over $1300 a month for the same coverage in just a few years. We couldn’t afford to keep paying it. Let’s see… house payment or health insurance? Or Groceries or health insurance?
Jonco I was talking about people who dont work, here in Georgia its damn welfare central
But the problem is, people who DO work can’t afford it or won’t be able to if the rates keep climbing and there is no indication that they won’t.
First of all, I never claimed you said anything is factual–I said the video suggests that. The problem is, there are those who believe the statements in the video are true. And that therein lies my issue. One rule of humor (specifically a story based joke), the thing that makes that joke funny, is that there is an element of truth to it and the punchline puts a twist on that. This video is nothing but lies and the ones who would see it as funny are the people who believe the lies. Which just gives them reason to believe they are right in their thinking. Trust me, I’m one who laughs at many inappropriate things, but this issue hits home for a lot of people and when misinformation is put out there and people don’t take the time to learn the facts it gets frustrating for those who really need solutions. Anyhow, an example of good political humor–Will Rogers–his material still works even today.

And the New York Times itself did the math and admits the program saves the US about a 2-hour supply of oil.
