Man jumps off bridge to save dog

Bibi the dog was blown away by his walk, literally. The tiny Maltese-shitzu cross came off second best when gale-force winds ripped across the Melbourne pier in Australia as he was strolling on with owner Sue Drummond.

Ms Drummond watched helplessly as Bibi, who tried valiantly to doggy paddle back to Brighton Pier, was blown further into the surging water by winds of more than 100km/h.  Lucky for Bibi, Raden Soemawinata stripped down to shirt, pants and socks dived in after the terrified dog.

Mr Soemawinata, 20, was on the pier for a family ceremony to scatter his grandmother’s ashes into the Melbourne bay. “It was pretty cold and windy but it wasn’t such a hard decision to jump in, it wasn’t such a great feat,” he said.

  1. Thats awesome. I havetn heard a good story in SO LONG! Im happy I have my staffy bulls! They wont be blowing off any bridges anytime soon.:0) Who has that guys number? Hes WONDERFUL and hes cute! ;0)

  2. Quelle grande âme! Un de mes fils a sauvé son chien en rampant sur la glace il y a quelques années. C’est encourageant de voir qu’il y a beaucoup de bonnes personnes dans ce monde.

  3. I am probably in the minority here but being a dog lover I probably would have done the same thing (although I would have made sure no other idiot was going to do it first). But I would have done it for the lady’s sake, not the dog’s. I know how awful it can be to lose your pet like this, but if it was a stray I would have let it be (survival of the fittest).

  4. Shame on you Shayne. What does it matter stray or pedigree. Kind of an immature comment.Focus on the moment of rescue and not your aryan philosphy. Who cares what your warped ideas are. This was a beautiful gesture of humanity toward living things.

  5. Hey Shayne,
I hope u fall in a river and nobody helps you and says as smug as u clearly are hey man survival of the fittest cause your just a stray human with nobody to claim you. A life is a life is a life my not so deep friend

  6. What a lovely person. I have allways that there are more ggod people than bad in this world.Proves my theory is right.

  7. An amazing and alomost perfect act of compassion. This guy might have made a stupid choice in risking his life for a strange dog, but with the memory of losing a loved one so vivid in his mind, he made the choice to spare someone else such pain. Have you looked at the way the dog looks to him as he’s getting in the water? this was a beautiful gesture of respect to the imporatance of life.

  8. Looking at those pictures made me want to cry. Watching that dog struggle, it was awful. If it was my dog I’d have went in after it myself not even thinking about leaving clothes to be dry for me after I got back out. I’m glad there are others willing to save the furry members of other peoples families as well as the fleshy ones. I love my pets like as much as the people in my life. I mean, who else do you know who makes you happy instead of repulsing you when they lick your face?

  9. Awww i would do exactly that i love dogs but if i saw one going 100 KM away i wouldnt strip down i would just jump in no matter what happened to me,as long as i helped a dog.

  10. Pretty heroic act, but title is kinda misleading, because i was expecting a 50 ft jump, lol. He actually checked with his toes to see if water was cold first, lol. Anyway still is something humble and brave to do.

  11. oh my god! that is sooo brave! and holy crap! i would of dont the same!!!!!! ANIMAL LOVERS UNITE!

  12. Uh, sorry I have to be the voice of reason here… but why the F*CK didn’t that woman have the dog on a leash? That would have probably prevented this incident from even happening.

  13. to Jimbo
you are absolutely right. It wouldn’t have happened if she had had the dog on a leash i mean him saving the dog is heroic and amazing but she should of had the dog on a leash.

  14. to the douches ripping on shayne: It was really cool what this kid did, and I’m glad he saved a life, but those who wish bad things upon another “LIFE” more specifically a “HUMAN LIFE” such as Shayne’s, you need to be “put down”. you guys are worse in reality, than Shayne is in you own twisted view of him. The point is, be careful what you say, (or write), because you may be shooting yourself in the foot as Quovadismax and Donknottz have done. You two idiots are an embarrassment to the human race.

  15. What a wonderful story and great pictures. Too bad there always has to be one douche in the group. That would be you Shayne. Does your ass have splinters in it from sitting on the fence? Idiot.

  16. Oh, Ken. You are such a hypocrite. You say that it’s even worse to wish for someone to have something bad happen to them, yet you go along and post that you hope they get “put down”. :/

But this is a wonderful story. If I could swim better, I would also jump in to save the dog. This guy is amazing for doing such a kind act.

  17. Wow… She tries to Hang the dog by the caller after that kid goes to save it….. You know a real dog would just swim… Like say a Yellow Lab it would just swim… this is why we fail as a race. Natural selection is not allowed to continue.

  18. OMG people! I have a lab and a beagle, and I love them both dearly, but if you think that I’m going to risk my LIFE for them, you’re wrong! Here’s a wake up call: Dogs are NOT people; human life is so much more valuable; also think about it: would you GO TO JAIL or a POW camp for a dog? If not, then don’t say that you’d jump off a bridge and risk your life for one.

  19. …I didn’t see any picture of the lady helping the heroic gentleman out of the water. I only saw her retrieve her dog…

  20. I used to like only cats, not dogs, but now like both since I got a jack russell puppy who my boyfriend and I treat as if she was our baby – and if she landed in water and risked drowning I would certainly want her saved or probably even jump in myself to get her. It was very kind of this man to save Bibi.

  21. wait, why is a human life more important than any other animal’s life?
    why are we more important?
we arent, sorry to say. and yes i would risk my life for a dog, but i wouldnt go to jail for a dog. jail is a form of torture and if it was too long then no i wouldnt do it. but dying is a lot easier than torture, – why people attempt suicide in jail.
but yeah a human life is not more important and to ken and all the others, that dog was just as imprtant there aas you would be, you arent any more special. prove it if you are, what makes you so much better? that you are intelligent? you are also arses, where as the dog hasnt been slagging people off. 😉

  22. I sure as hell WOULD go to jail or a POW camp or do anything for my dog for that matter. All lives are sacred, and humans are no better than dogs, in fact often dogs are a lot nicer, loyal, and loving. I probably wouldnt go to jail or a POW camp for a dog i didnt know, but i would certainly do my best to save its life.

*waits for shallow people to start bitchin’*
