Man jumps off bridge to save dog

Bibi the dog was blown away by his walk, literally. The tiny Maltese-shitzu cross came off second best when gale-force winds ripped across the Melbourne pier in Australia as he was strolling on with owner Sue Drummond.

Ms Drummond watched helplessly as Bibi, who tried valiantly to doggy paddle back to Brighton Pier, was blown further into the surging water by winds of more than 100km/h.  Lucky for Bibi, Raden Soemawinata stripped down to shirt, pants and socks dived in after the terrified dog.

Mr Soemawinata, 20, was on the pier for a family ceremony to scatter his grandmother’s ashes into the Melbourne bay. “It was pretty cold and windy but it wasn’t such a hard decision to jump in, it wasn’t such a great feat,” he said.

  1. My Grandmother grew up at Brighton. It is a very upmarket suburb. I am glad but a little surprised by this story. Gives me hope for man kind!

  2. I wish mass media had more news like this to share. Good job sir, I only hope I would have done the same thing. We all should hope we would.

  3. As owner of three shitzu’s I can’t imagine the horror watching your pet
in such danger. The young man is a true hero, his grandmother would have been proud.

  4. does no1 else think that was really stupid i mean it was heart in the right plce and all but theres a line between brave and stupid

  5. This was great that this man jumped in to get the dog. It wasn’t stupid or foolish. I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to save my little dog from any danger. I was a disaster worker at Ground Zero after 9/11 and, after coming home, I just wanted something little to love on. My little dog saved me from what could have been an emotional disaster. Yep, I’d go right on over that bridge, too.

  6. For those cynics who said he was trying to impress the lady, did u see picture of owner? She could have been his granny. What a wonderful lad he must be. I wish there were more like him. For the man that said he was really stupid, I suggest he stop staring in the mirror and looking at himself. Kind and caring is not stupid, especially where there is no alternative reward. Dogs are Gods little angel messengers, each one coming only for a short time to teach us about beig a better person. If packie holds the word dog up to a mirror he would see the real value of a dog that most anyone who has had one would know,

And for the person who only likes big dogs, and calls this one a rat dog, I suggest he makes friends with the rat dog of his low self esteem…where only a big dog distracts him from how little he must feel.

  7. Anyone who has compassion for another human, or animal, will understand why this guy jumped in the water. It’s not surprising to see sarcastic comments about the dogs rescue. Unfortunately many people are numb to violence and death, after all it’s everywhere in the movies and on television. However, changing the channel in real life isn’t an option. I think it’s inspiring to see a selfless act of kindness in a world where everyone seems to be more and more focused on themselves.

  8. what a great guy. a girl def need to grab him up. we need more people like him in this world.

  9. “get the chick”? it said he was at a family ceremony besides the fact that the dog belonged to an old lady

  10. So did they do the ashes? I mean, if its that windy, does Gramma come back another day? There might be other good deeds out there that will need to be done, on some other day. Many thanks to the saver. And what a great picture of the puppies face.

  11. I think this was great. This world s so evil and mean, at least a small part if still has some feeling from the heart.

  12. Make sure we take down the names of the people who think this was stupid or calls the dog a rat dog. Make sure they get a do not recessitate and do not save attached to them. They take up useful space and deplete the oxygen for humans and dogs. May the man that saved the dog get 10 extra years of good life.

  13. That dog should never have went out with Ted Kennedy’s dog in the first place. Isn’t Ted’s dog a Portuguese Water Dog?

  14. A 14 year-old boy just died in a town near me today. He jumped in a river to help his dog and they were both drowned. True story, dogs are great but to die saving one is terrible waste of a human life.

  15. What a GREAT story!!!! Brings a smile to your face……..Nice guy!!!! I’m sure the owner couldn’t find words…….

  16. The photo gallery makes it an even BETTER story!!!!! I love the look on the owner’s face when she gets Bibi back….

I’m so sorry for your friend’s loss of life on the comment b/4 mine. Most people DON’T think when they are doing things of this nature, they just react.

  17. Some photographers will stoop to any low in order to obtain dramatic shots like this, but to toss that poor little dog into the water like that just to shoot the rescue is beyond despicable! I wonder if this is the same photog who did the same to the little boy over in Darling Harbor a few years back during the festival.

  18. I found this story on current.com/news website.
I blogged it on another website.
This is something I would do.

  19. I have to admit the sarcasm in Getouttahere’s post is at least funny … Fine young man, and I’m sure Granny was smiling down thinking what a good boy they’d raised.

  20. I think it was really stupid of the guy, but I’d do exactly the same thing in his position. At least I would for my own dog.

  21. I hate furry, little dogs, but that’s really not the point of the story.

This is a living, breathing thing.

Yeah, it’s an animal, but so are we (albeit, of much higher status).

    This guy is incredible.

    I bow down to him.

  22. FACT:
The longer a comment thread gets increases the likely hood of stupid, arrogant people leaving stupid arrogant comments using their stupid form of typing.

“Dis guy is st00pid. any1 agree?”
