Mike F writes that Grog’s history lesson got him to thinking about having B&P readers come up with some plausible stories.
Here is Mike’s story on how Bits & Pieces came to be:
When Jon Cohen was a young man he met a fellow soldier, Bob, who had been stationed in Australia so he decided to take a visit there once he retired from the military to see his old friend. They had been kicking around the idea of starting up a website for fun stuff but his friend’s wife was opposed to it. The woman, whose name is Mali, thought owning a website would be paramount to inviting all sorts of hacker attacks and identity theft and millions of spam mail a day!
Jon and his friend had wanted users of the site to send in their favorite photos of hot women they knew, or saw on the net, and the original name of the site was going to be “Pieces of Ate”. Well, again Mali thought that was a bad idea, and the two men were at wit’s end to find some way to get a website going and at the same time get Bob’s wife onboard with the project.
As it turns out, they found a computer expert to assure Mali it was safe to operate a website. They tested the site and she used her phobia to create the first user account, which was Bitscared, because she was more than a bit scared of what might happen if they opened up the site. Her fears of hacker attacks were proved unfounded but she was adamant about the name, “Pieces of Ate” was not going to be used. Finally, Bob and Jon decided to incorporate Mali’s name into the name, and “Bits and Pieces” was born.
And that my friends is not how Bits & Pieces began.
Can you guys do any better?
But he was pretty dayum close, wasn’t he?
I read that as “Bitch and Pieces” the first 3 times.
Could be it would have worked too? =P
But he was pretty
dayumDAYUM close, wasn’t he?There, DJ, fixed it for ya.
And God said “Let Bits & Pieces be born”
And so it was.
And it was wondrous.
You betcha, Paul.
I needed that.
I thought B&P was always around. I distinctly remember my Dad coming home from work all tired and dusty, and sitting down with a beer and Bits & Pieces way back in the 50s. It always made him feel better. The beer I mean.
And in school, whenever we were caught peeking at B&P in the library, we were given a swat by Fuhrer Thelma Knurr, the ancient librarian lady with the stockings that made a sound like corduroy pants when she walked. That was fun…”Thank you Ma’am, may I have another?”
In ‘Nam, we actually found B&P in the abandoned huts of the villagers along the HoChiMin Trail, and I still get all weepy when I think of fellow Ohioan John Glenn taking a copy of B&P into orbit on that first space flight.
Tearing up a floor in a house in the old part of town, I actually found B&P under the bottom layer of old flooring. Apparently they used it as an insulating material when that house was built back at the turn of the century. Of course, that was less than a decade ago, so not that big a deal.
And there is a persistent, but unverifiable, rumor among us Civil War buffs that Bits &Pieces is the one thing that finally pushed Mary Todd Lincoln over the brink into the deep dark recesses of pure insanity. Let that be a warning…
Who is this Bitsy? Has one of my other personalities finally started commenting for itself?!
You aren’t you? Then who is you?

Jon and co had been toying with the idea of putting all the amusing things they came across on the internet in one place. They researched this and decided that a web site dedicated to such a great idea was the only way. Many brainstorming meetings went by, but a name couldn’t be agreed upon. Many hours of bickering and dissension later the group decided that it was too hard and that it wasn’t fun anymore, so disbanded, leaving Jon on his own. Still determined to create this utopia of humour and not wanting to look like a loser with no mates Jon decided he would be Jonco (Jon and Co) but still a name was needed. While sitting back and eating some Reese’s Pieces (Mmmmmm Reese’s) Jonco was think about what to name his site, he thought so long that the packet of Reese’s was finished, tipping the last little bits in to his hand, Jonco says “I just love these bits of Pieces!” *Bink!* “Bits AND pieces, that’s it!!” And the rest they say is history!
DJ, Don’t forget about the really early days of B&P. Many issues were found at the bottom of outhouses before the Sears catalogs were printed.
yea I with talk with you tomorrow I missed you last week
Bitscared is so modest to leave herself out of her own version of the story =P
What?! I’m talking to myself now?!! 🙂
Are we Megan Gale?
Uh oh, we have two Bitsy’s!
It’s all part of my plan to take over the world one Bitsy at a time! BWAHAHAHA!
