The baseball incident that won’t die

Steve-bartmanJohn Kass of the Chicago Tribune wrote an interesting article about the incident involving Steve Bartman, a Chicago Cubs fan who, like most fans tried to catch a foul ball at a baseball game.  Unfortunately it was during a playoff game where the Cubs had a chance to secure a spot in the World Series in October 0f 2003.  Bartman leaned over the railing as any baseball fan would do, just as Moisés Alou was jumping to catch the ball.  Of course Alou missed the ball and it seemed that this was the turning point in the game.

The article is about an ESPN documentary about the incident titled, “Let’s Pull the Wings off Flies”.

  1. Being an Oriole fan Jeffrey Maier Pisses me off more. Bread and butter fly out turned into home run via fan interference giving the Yanks the tying run that put them into extra innings where they won.

  2. Waaaaaa.
I guess the proper solution to all this is to ban fans from attending games, and every team can just play out it’s 162 games in empty stadiums.

  3. I like how the Cubs and their fans blame this fan on the Cubs blowing it. If it was the fan’s fault, why did the Cubs give up about 8 unanswered runs during that game after the fan interfered?

If they can fall apart that easily from something like this, they do not deserve to be called a major league baseball team. And that could explain why they have not won a World Series in over 100 years and it has been over 60 years since they have been in the World Series.

  4. Bartman didn’t do anything that any other fan would not have done. The incident with the O’s and Yankee’s was really a robbery. If you consider that Bartman’s action would not have been changed by instant replay and Maier was obviously interferring, it’s no contest. And no, I’m not a fan of any of these teams. Go Braves!
