This interesting YouTube video records a ceremony on the India-Pakistan border. The British set the borders of the two new nations in 1947. From the beginning, they were fierce rivals. Contested land coupled with religious and cultural disputes led to violence.
But not all differences are acted out with violence. The Wagah border is the only road linking the two countries. And every night, the border is closed with a fascinating ceremony.
Hundreds of citizens attend the ceremony on both sides. Soldiers put a on an aggressive show. They strut and stomp and chant and yell. This show of force is entertaining and serious at the same time. But there is an undercurrent of respect and cooperation. The ceremony ends with a handshake across the border.
Thanks DJ
It is quite a sight! Thanks to the British for cultivating so much hate for their own selfish reasons, tourists will get to see this show of strength for many years to come.
some parts remind me the “ministry of silly walks'” sketch by monty python…
amazing cerimony, nevertheless
u can`t trust the pakistanis they shake hand in evening & fire like hell in night.
morons
Sagar, I don’t see why you blame the hostility between Muslims and Hindus on the British, it existed long before the partition of India, and probably before the arrival of the British.
Alan, have you not heard of “divide and conquer”? Whether or not there was some hostility before the British invaded, the British sure did not hesitate to use that to their advantage, and yes, even possibly exacerbating it for their selfish gains.
That was impressive…and I did catch the narrator mentioning “having to get approval from The Ministry of Silly Walks”, too. That was a bit of a snicker. 😉
lol, it looks more like a cock fight to me, giant turkeys strutting around.
cultural traditions can be so silly – but entertaining at the same time..
@Alan: Thanks for asking. I wish I could even begin to summarize how the British are completely and fully responsible for this mess. This Hindu-Muslim hostility has been wrongly glorified and used for selfish purposes for far too long and unfortunately it will continue this way. If Hindus and Muslims really hated each other so much there wouldn’t be more Muslims in India than in Pakistan … there’s just far too much to tell and I can’t do that here. Thanks for asking anyway.
