New spam policy at B&P

SpamUp until now I have always skimmed through the spam filter to make sure there isn’t something there that is a real comment.  I’m no longer able, nor willing, to do that.  With 200 – 300 spams a day it’s just too time consuming.  And for the very few comments I find that I believe are legit, it’s just not worth it.  So if you leave a comment and it looks like spam to my spam filter, then it’s probably not going to make it though to the post.  It might be because you have too many links in it for Viagra or tramadol (whatever that is) or you’re selling software thru a link, or you send a few dozen similar comments out in a short period of time… I don’t know all the spam filtering rules.  But it does a really good job.  Nor perfect, but really good.

This shouldn’t affect comments that are held for moderation.  Comments are held for moderation because they have bad words or too many links (and the software just isn’t sure about it) or you’re a first time commenter.  These I usually see and approve a couple times a day.

Now back to our regular programming.

  1. “Just checking to see if this passes the spam filter.”

Does a cat have an ass?
    LMAO @ Klaw

  2. You don’t know what Tramadol is?? I had a Triple Tramadol Supremo at Taco Bell on Friday.
It’s now el stucko. Gotta call Sitty Hall in the morning to send out in a crew.

  3. I’m impressed. It’s been catching just about anything I throw at it.

  4. @Duude… obviously the other things you were throwing at it weren’t long enough…. 🙂

How about adding a CAPTCHA to your comments section? It should drastically reduce the number of spam comments.

  5. Jonco – Please don’t add the CAPTCHA. Half the time, I can’t make out the letters and have to start over. Bummer.

  6. Don’t worry Richard. I don’t expect that to happen. My spam filtering software does a great job of sorting what it believes is spam. I just won’t ber going thru that spam list of 200-300 spams a day to see if there are any real comments in there. I’m just deleting them automatically now. So nothing will change for the vast majority of comments and commenters.

  7. I use Akismet. It does a great job… but not perfect. It puts the 200 plus spams where I can go thru them to see if anything is there that shouldn’t be. Once in a while there is a legit comment. That’s what I’m no longer doing – going through the spam stuff. I just delete everything Akismet thinks is spam.
