14 signal lights for one intersection

Traffic signals

I took this photo the other day at the Kingshighway exit of westbound I-64 in St. Louis.  There are fourteen signal lights to control this fairly simple intersection.  The picture makes it look like there are a dozen or so streets all coming together at one place.

  1. got lost on kingshighway leaving the zoo one time..talk about flipping the fuck out and being lost

  2. I’m betting that the transporation department had money left over and wasn’t about to give it back.

  3. Carter, I go no further than The Hill, Volpi salami and a quick stop at Courtesy Drive In on the way outta there. They have the best burgers in the world.

  4. IMSA standards require a signal for each lane to avoid accidents and thus lawsuits. If they DIDN’T have them there would be PI attorneys hanging out at this intersection like cheap tarts in a red light district.

  5. I think that it’s funny that they have red light cameras there. In case you run a red light in that crappy intersection you can get a ticket!!!

  6. JGB, those cameras are used to adjust the stop light function, according to volume. I have cameras in my town to take a pic of your license plate, they are clearly marked…..photo enforced.

  7. I lived my whole college life in STL. I’ve been gone a bit over the last couple years though. I think my last comment was made when I was living in China. Now I live by Mexico City. When I go back to STL, I’m going to check this place out. I don’t remember this existing the last time I was on Kingshighway. Though, I didn’t really go on Kingshighway much. Stuck to 170, 270, 370 and 44 a lot of times.

  8. Daniel,
It is a new overpass over I-64 (better known as highway 40 to locals). Right now the interstate ends at Kingshighway because they’re rebuilding a five mile stretch of I-64 from Kingshighway to I-170. They rebuilt the part from I-170 to I-270 last year. The whole thing should be complete by the end of this year.
