  1. Frankly, Bill, I didn’t see this as racist when I sent it to in. If maybe you’re referring to the fourth point, I really thought it was a shot at Garth Brooks. Since we have been hearing the phrase “The first black (fill in the blank)” for about two years, I thought we were all used to that one by now. I thought it was the reference to Brooks that made it kinda funny.

But I sure understand what you’re saying, I really do…You’re saying that anytime anyone writes or posts any kind of humor anywhere that has the word ‘black’ anywhere in or near it, it’s automatically offensive and off limits.

I wonder if you thought the popular statement ‘Bush is worse than Hitler’ was offensive to anyone (can you think of who?) and if you spoke up.

BTW, the awesome irony of your post is that you see racism, which conceivably aims to insult 12% of the US population, as unacceptable, but sexism, which insults 50% of the population, is just fine.

  2. Well sexism goes both ways and I don’t see it as derogatory in humor, just funny. Racism, however is different in that respect. I agree Obama is fair game, but as the president, not as a black man. The title “Black president’s history month” made it racist more than anything. I don’t have a history of defending black people and I have plenty of racist friends, but I have an extraordinary respect and admiration for Obama, because of all he has accomplished as a black man in a white man’s world.

    • Bill, I agree with you in regards to respect for Mr. Obama. I think he’s a fine man and a great communicator. Time will tell how he does as president. I hope he becomes the best president ever. This post is a parody by the Onion. It’s called comedy. It parodies Black History Month.
Briefly racism is the “hatred or intolerance of another race or other races”. There is nothing in this post that displays hatred or intolerance. Just because something mentions the words black doesn’t make it racist.

  3. DJ, thanks for the post, and your defense of it was right on target.
Surely if we can have an official “Black history month” …we can have the occasional joke like this one.
Like Larry said,”payback’s a bitch”….just happens to be your ox getting gored now Bill.

  4. Ok, I concede, because I didn’t realize there was actually a “Black history month” for real, which would make it a parody and not racist. Thanks for the clarification Jonco.

    • You’re welcome. February is Black History Month, and has been for many years now. It’s not been a secret. I don’t know how you hadn’t heard of it.
Just be careful where you point that finger next time. It could be loaded and go off accidentally.

  5. those sharpening their knives to attack President Obama, do so based on his actions and/or whether or not you agree with them.

Bush was attacked for being an idiot – not his race.

  6. Here we go again..
Anyway, let’s look at this from a different perspective. Let’s call President Obama the first Half-White president for the rest of the year, and see the cartoons and remarks that arise.

  7. DJ, you can submit whatever you like, and Jonco, you can post whatever you want. Its a free country and you are entitled to your opinion and have the right to express it.

However, I take exception to one thing you said in your ‘defense’ comment above, and that is “…racism, which conceivably aims to insult 12% of the US population”. That’s wrong. Racism insults 100% of the *world’s* population.

    Think about it.

  8. For the 9 billionth time…HE’S NOT “BLACK,” he’s BI-RACIAL. Read the first line of the thing for goodness sakes… Maybe at the end of 4- or 8 or whatever- years, the media will finally grasp this concept too…

  9. Hey Bill, concerning this line “payback’s a bitch”….just happens to be your ox getting gored now Bill.”…I regret submitting that. Many times in the heat of the moment I say something I later regret, it happens on B&P as well and this is one of those times. I don’t dislike Obama, just his politics, and i’m certainly not a racist. I just enjoy humor even if it’s at the expense of a black man, or as KXR says, Bi-racial.

After seeing Bush pummeled repeatedly( I’ve never seen that level of virulence directed at anyone much less a sitting president) I got sick of it and vowed Obama’s time would come. But, I’m not very good at carring grudges. I’ll bust his chops if I think he’s wrong, but I won’t operate from hate, I’m not wired that way.

One other thing, I appreciated the way you admitted your error.

  10. I sent it to Jon, I guess he did not approve. I’m sure I am doing something wrong, what is the correct way to submit an avatar? dunno

  11. You are correct Jonco, and I was right in the middle of it, giving him grief, and it was easy because I never liked Clinton.
With Bush, I really liked him, for a time. I tried to be loyal, and it’s still hard to admit what I know to be true. He was a poor president.

  12. Gully…Of course you’re right. I’ll admit I had trouble typing that, and I hoped someone would comment on it. I was thinking of the specific “brand” of racism that is on everybody’s mind these days in the US. As you said, racism is the world’s problem…it happens on every continent and I suppose always has, and I fear it always will. I imagine that at some time in their lives, everyone ‘commits’ racism and everyone is a victim of it. I suppose the same thing (or related to it) would be ethnic-ism (don’t know what to call it!). But anyway, thanks for stepping up. I knew somebody had to.

  13. Jon,
I appreciate the rationalization for why “it’s not racist.” But it is. And it’s not racist in that “Ok but it’s damned funny” sort of way. It’s actually racist in that “hurtful / hateful” sort of way. I HATE I mean H-A-T-E political correctness. But PC is a knee jerk reaction to ignorance. The post presents an ignorant level of humor. YOU aren’t ignorant, but I do question the judgment of putting this up. Of course, you also have the huevos to stand up and take the criticism. So, while I disagree, as always, I respect. I hope you have a great weekend and I truly tip of the cap to the best site on the god forsaken web!
