This Sturgeon was caught on the Willamette River just below Oregon City. It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11’1″. It was 56″ around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.
Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water. They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.
Thanks Gene
48 beers, for 4 guys over a 6 hour period? What did they drink after the first hour?
feel sorry for those poor bastards that are touching that sturgeon bare skinned. sturgeon have microscopic barbs all over their body and they can really give you a nasty infection.
^ That’s what all the beer was for.
Hey, is one of those dudes WooHoo?
DJ, I understand.
they could have had a sh*tload of cavair or however its spelled
Big b*ggers like this are almost extinct. I’m close to the Fraser River where they come up from Vancouver, and they are some ugly b@stards. They are also prehistoric and for that I am thankful to this crew for following the rules. I see the ropes and I’m hoping that this fish was revived and sent on its way. I believe in catch and release, I believe in catch and eat when it is not an endangered species, and I believe in catching food to feed your family. This is not one of them. Other than that, I’ve caught a 36 lb. salmon and watched it dance, and put it on the barby. Yummers.
DAMN Bella, you are a keeper, live in the BC (North at that), fish and the eat fish, understand the principles of real conservation, chill your beer in the snow, great sense of humor, etc ….
Do you need a man to keep you company on those cold nights? but I am sure you are already taken…
Hey Thanks, Jimbohassler. Those are kind words and you just made my day!!
And Happily Single. 🙂
Bella, just tell me that you like to go hunting and I’ll have to challenge jimbo to a steelcage death match. Winner gets first dibs on you…
LOL. Sorry Richard but my stomach is too queasy for hunting although I love wild meat. (Quiet infidel) I have lots of friends that hunt, male and female, and they are kind enough to bring me samples and I cook it to perfection. We have tons of moose, deer, elk and bear so lots of variety. Someone told me that bear tastes like pork but I have to disagree. I tried it but that was enough. Sooooo no cage fight necessary. Now with fishing, you’d be hard pressed to get me off the river bank for days. No greater peace in life than the river flowing and a flat of Canadian.
I live in southern Idaho and there is a lot of sturgeon fishing here, there is a fish hatchery in the canyon close to where i live called Clear Springs, they are famous for their trout. They have a pond there with 2 sturgeon in it, and a viewing window below so you can look through the pond. When i was younger they had one in there about the size of the one in the picture, ugly looking thing, they said it was over 200 years old. But on the fishing side of things, i love trout….
