Horse rescued from frozen pond

A dramatic rescue saves a six-year-old horse that had fallen into an ice-covered pond. The horse, named Pencil, spent hours in the frigid water with its hooves stuck in the pond’s muddy bottom – not able to move.

For at least four hours today, Pencil the walking horse was up to his neck in a frozen pond. His owner ran a snow plow all night. When he came home around 10, Pencil didn’t come tothe barn with the other horses. He went looking for him.

“I just walked over by them cat tails and there he was in there with his head stickin’ up out of the water.”

Northern Kentucky’s Technical Rescue team was dispatched to the farm on Route 8. Firefighters kept Pencil calm and hatched a plan. They’ve trained for this but not under these conditions. “As you can see here we’re on the side of a hill. There are 10-11 inches of snow on the ground. It’s hard to get to.”

The team geared up in ice suits and hauled in equipment. A backhoe couldn’t make it to the pond so about 10 manpower did what one horsepower couldn’t do.
