B&P confession

Up to this point I have read ALL the comments submitted to B&P posts.  It’s numbering into the hundreds every day now. (I see them differently that you do, they’re in chronological order, not by posts.)  I just don’t have the mental energy to keep reading all the hate being spewed forth in some of the political comments.  Many, maybe even most are well written but completely one-sided (and not necessarily one side or the other).  They just reek of political bias and hatred and that’s not what I created B&P for.  No one is going to change someone else’s political opinions with a comment here. Contrary to popular belief YOU are not always right.

But, I have to admit, my eyes have been opened and my mind stimulated by many comments on many different posts and I thank you all for that.  But I can’t… and won’t continue to read these ongoing slams about how awful one person is and how wonderful someone else is…unless they’re speaking of me of course :-).

I’ve thought about disabling comments, but I don’t want to do that.  You guys are what makes B&P fun…well, most of you anyway.   

So, for now, I’ll just skim over as much of the negativity as I can and still try to keep the spam out.  If something slips by me that is spam I’m counting on you guys to let me know and I’ll delete it. 

I will continue to focus on the things I find humorous and interesting to me.  Of course, some of that will be political… but if it’s funny I’ll post it no matter what political persuasion it bites.  If you find it offensive, just wait, something will probably come along soon that swings in the other direction.  If not too bad.

I also want to say a special thanks to people like Mike F, DJ, Scott, Infidel, Bella, Bitscared, KLAW, heehee, Gary and many others for their humorous input.  I know I forgot some other regular contributors, but these in particular seem to make me laugh more than normal… and for that I thank you.

  2. You know Jon, I think you have a very valid point.

    I come here every day to get away from the BS I find eveywhere else and dammed if I’m not guilty of bringing some of it with me.

    I think from this point on I’ll resign from politics on B&P.

    I get enough of it everywhere else. I don’t need to do that here.

    For those of you who I might have offended, I apologize, even if you were so terribly damn wrong you make me give up thnking evolution was right all along.

    Dammit, I’m doing it again.

    I’ll quit, honest.

  4. I can feel your pain. I have too many friends/
    contacts that simply cannot accept a different
    point of view. Of course they are the same
    people that voted for McCain/Palin. I’m sure
    they all are installing six foot security fences
    around their homes as I write this.

  5. I do enjoy that in a thread about posting negative, one-sided, slamming comments someone has posted a negative, one-sided, slamming comment.

  6. Well said Jonco. I truly enjoy this blog and hope it doesn’t become a serious political forum of any sort. A “poke” here and there can be funny I agree, but “bashing” is for people who are too quick to judge.

  7. I have a confession, too. I don’t read many of the novel-length comments, especially when there are several dozen of them for one post. I know I’ve submitted a few myself, but I think it’s rare. I think being concise gets the point across more effectively sometimes. And besides, my internet-degenerated brain doesn’t have the ability to digest so much info anymore. In a few years, I probably won’t be able to comprehend anything more than fuzzy kitty pictures as drool drips from my chin.

  12. Sorry about the fence rant, Jonco. I was totally out of line and it will never happen again. I wanted to Nail my neighbour but instead I took out my anger on Your site. I Love what you do to make us laugh… and I am ashamed of myself. Joking aside, I agree and have made mistakes myself. Now on with the laughter coz that’s what we’re all here for….and I Thank You, Sir. XOXO

  20. Thank you! After reading some of the mindless vitriol, I almost decided to skip B&P. Then I decided just to skip the comments. The amount of really baseless hatred expressed by some of your readers is horrifying.

  21. Being an Aussie i dont think i ever looked at the comments on politically based pictures…and i was relieved when you had your election because it seemed to take forever.I love all the other banter in the comments section though…cracks me up sometimes.

  22. I really love this site too!! I’ve been a big fan from back in the first-b&p-site days. I learnt early on to not look at comments posted under political things that you post, I find the posts funny and don’t want to get involved in the ranting! I rarely comment on anything, but I usually read the comments, and want to thank the commenters that Jonco mentioned too, you guys always make me laugh.

    And Jonco, don’t let my silent lurking tell you otherwise, I think you’re the best!

    Jonco I love you! Father Jon! Maybe you should have a score thing like they do on youtube were readers vote on the comments, and can rate them as negative remarks. That would be cool!

  25. Mea Culpa, yeah i’ve done a little ranting…. but dad(insert whining tone) I was provoked…. just kidding, consider me properly chastised. Thanks for stepping in, we were getting out of hand.
    Now that I think about it(wait, can I think ABOOT it? Always wanted to be Canadian for a few minutes……………………………..okay thats ABOOT enough) lately, seems everytime I click on B&P i’m subconciously gearing up for battle. As much as I love this site( and my wife thinks i’m obsessed) I do want to be here mostly to laugh, and for the camaraderie.
    Following Mikes lead, if I have offended, my apologies.

    Thanks Jonco, I am truly glad I found this place.

  27. Even if you simply locked the comments for political themed posts, that’d be fine. (If it shows a politician, or refers to a recent political decision. Otherwise the chances are -while positive- less that it will turn into political flaming.
    Don’t forget that it does not help that much if (we) regulars agree not to debate, these posts often bring out the lurkers to spread their wisdom.

    I do agree that for some reason people are really taking the ‘political comments’ to almost a point of anger. They fail to see the humor in a political joke.

    Keep posting what you think is funny. I agree that a lot of the responses seem to only be one sided.

    It is a sad note that people can not find the humor, in a joke.

  32. re: Welcome to Bits & Pieces! It’s where I post things that I find funny, amazing, interesting or that just strike me in one way or another.

    I think this is the reason we all keep coming back for more.

    It’s when Jonco posts political videos that all the bickering starts. I’m not saying that’s wrong, but it’s just not the purpose of this site.

    There are other sites to voice your opinions on those topics.

  34. Jonco, thanks for caring about what’s going on in your site, but it seems that most all of the ranters get their comeuppance from the regulars. I have learned to ignore any post that is more than 4-5 sentences long, unless it is from Bella, Mike or infidel.

  36. Instead of ranting here today, I controlled myself and went outside and threw snowballs at the 1st grade girls getting off the school bus. I feel better now.

    It’s half of a puzzle, and the comments are the other half. I love clicking to see what the others have said. Well, most of them anyway.
