A top 10 of irritating expressions has been compiled by researchers at Oxford University.
Heading the list was the expression ‘at the end of the day’, which was followed in second place by the phrase ‘fairly unique’.
The tautological statement “I personally” made third place – an expression that BBC Radio 4 presenter John Humphreys has described as “the linguistic equivalent of having chips with rice.”
Also making the top 10 is the grammatically incorrect “shouldn’t of”, instead of “shouldn’t have”.
The top ten most irritating phrases:
1 – At the end of the day
2 – Fairly unique
3 – I personally
4 – At this moment in time
5 – With all due respect
6 – Absolutely
7 – It’s a nightmare
8 – Shouldn’t of
9 – 24/7
10 – It’s not rocket science
Someone out there has a wee bit too much time on their hands.
You for got “Clearly”. Clearly you don’t understand what I am doing so mind your own!
At the end of the day, I still conclude, Bits & pieces is fairly unique. I personally peruse the posts on a daily basis,as i’m doing at this moment in time. With all due respect to Jonco I absolutely enjoy some of the posts I see here. It’s a nightmare when I read comments from a controversial post, I say to myself nooo, they shouldn’t of. Finally, my wife tells me, “relax after all it’s not rocket science”. Ok but i’m still going to Bits & pieces
wee bit
I use five of the phrases
“literally” – As in “I literally died when I read Jonco’s blog.”
“Absolutely” is not a phrase! I’d replace it with my own pet hate, “ballpark figure”!
You forgot “WIHI?”
Irregardless
Not even a word.
I personally (haha) hate “As a matter of fact”.
surely as is dont call me surely
Number 1 is actually my number 1 hate. At the end of the day I wish people would just stop using that f***** phrase! 😉
“To be honest”, i.e. I’m lying to you the rest of the time.
lmao Ana tell us how you really feel
So, Ana, how do you feel about the end of the night?
I hate phrases like:
– Not for Nothing..
– Obviously, Basically and TECHNICALLY
– Going forward
I guess i must be really dumb cuz people use those a lot around me.. Maybe I should get into ROCKET SCIENCE
“You know what I mean?”
I love it when this is thrown into a conversation a random moments that really make no sense whatsoever. Even better when it’s mentioned repeatedly.
Leah,
To stop tjhis merely answer, “No, what do you mean?”
Trust me, this breaks them of it.
Our CEO always says: At the end of the day; Moving Forward; and We Must Accept Change. But that’s OK coz all the big idiots say that. Buzz words. The best part of him dribbled down his Daddy’s leg.
