I saw this strange vehicle while crossing Tampa Bay today. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Most trikes have two wheels in the back and one in front.
Those are really popular around where I live. I have seen quite a few on the roads lately. I think they are odd looking.
It’s a Can-Am Spyder. They’re getting a lot of play in the motorcycle press lately.
I’ve seen one of these before, it caught me off guard. Haven’t seen another one yet.
I saw a yellow one of these just today. I thought it was cool looking.
Dallas, TX – 3 weeks ago. Yeah, strange.
We have a Can-Am dealer in town and see them on the road periodically. Last weekend there was one in the parking lot at my nephew’s football game. It was pretty fun to see all the kids look in awe. They thought it was cooler than the Batmobile.
It’s for stability. Normal trikes have a fixed rear axle and can tip during turns; this configuration, called a tadpole, allows the front wheels to have independent suspension and therefore allows the trike to lean like a motorcycle.
I truly believe, if they made a car that looked like a big piece of dog crap, someone out there would buy it and drive it.
Whoa! That bike has THREE wheels!
I’ve seen many of them in Greece. Look at this model http://www.gilerafuoco.com/ ( it’s Piaggio’s I think)
You don’t have to put legs on the ground when they are not moving.
As others have said, it’s a Can-Am Spyder. Manufactured by Bombardier, specifically their Recreational Products division. This is the same division that makes their Ski Doo’s and Sea Doo’s.
There is a car built the same way. It is called the T-Rex. I have seen both of them around the metro Atlanta area.
it has stabilization systems, but it does not lean, ie. no going hot into a corner.
I have test rode this bike and it DOES NOT lean at all in corners. If pushed to hard in a turn it will “pancake” or break loose the rear wheel and swap ends on you. The bike will throw you off and spin a circle. Also the stability control and traction control will not let you ride aggressively at all. I have a Yamaha R1 and like to carve corners and ride hard. If you want to cruise it would be ok but painting it sport bike colors and giving it the “racebike” look is missleading. It is like putting a 4 cylinder engine and a crappy suspension on a Corvette.
There is a company in New york called Spinwurkz that is making a 3 wheel Hayabusa that does lean and will take corners better. http://reversetrike.com/spinwurkz.html

Brudeli has a leaning version:

There have also been persistent rumors to HD making a leaning version of a trike.
