Remnants of Hurricane Ike

When did St. Louis move closer to the coast?  Just a couple weeks ago we got quite a rain storm from Hurricane Gustav.  Now today we’re getting the remnants of Hurricane Ike.  I don’t remember this happening like this before.

I put together this video from my back deck this morning.

This hit the St. Louis area about 7 am just as forecast.  Winds gusting to 40 MPH.  We got up to 5 inches of rain in just under 2 hours.  There are thousands around here without power.  Of course that’s nothing compared to what the people in Texas have gone through.

This storm is supposed to be out of here by this afternoon, and it’s already slowed down quite a bit.

  1. I live in Wentzville, just west of St. Louis. I love long rainy, windy days. So personally, I like Ike. I do agree with you though. It seems I remember some of the moisture from Katrina making it up here, but otherwise I just can’t remember another occasion like this, when a tropical storm moved this far inland like this.

  2. I live in Waddy, just outside of Louisville–we’ve had huge, enormous wind gusts and trees have fallen everywhere. Power is out on several blocks. Luckily I was missed! (knock on wood)

  3. Ye must be geting it good over there, we are geting the tail end of the storms here, and we are in Ireland, mind you it all ways rains here!

  4. Well, while Ike was churning up Texas, etc., Chicago and all of northern Illinois were getting a run o’ the mill, 2-day, non-stop rainstorm of up to 7 inches. THEN, just to add the cherry on top, Ike’s rainy remnants moved our way and gave us another couple of inches or more today. No wind, thank God, but lots of folks here are under water in a big way. Worst flooding in about 20-25 years.

  5. Have you seen the photos of Galveston? I live outside of Houston and we had some wind and rain but there are entire subdivisions GONE in the Galveston area. People are acting like it was just a little rain. The freeway to Galveston is so littered with pieces of peoples houses that no longer exhist that you can not even see the pavement. Why are you people complaining about rain? I think the national media is doing an extremely poor job of covering what is going on down here. We have a large portion of Houston without electricity or water.

  6. Tammy…. Re-read the post. It says “Of course that’s nothing compared to what the people in Texas have gone through.”.
I know it’s bad there. I’ve posted pics and links to more pics of the devastation. I’m not downplaying it at all. I’m just stating that the remnants of it reach all the way up here to the Midwest.

  7. Sounds like it strengthened after St. Louis? 75 mph gusts in Louisville and in Cincinnati. Lots-o-trees down. Lots of areas without power. Delays in making repairs because crews had gone down to Houston & Galveston, now coming home but need sleep before working again.
