We’re heading out for Milwaukee Thursday morning. The forecast is for rain in St. Louis and it looks like it’s going to follow us all the way up there. The green on the map is rain. (Light and dark green that is)
It’s 375 miles from St. Louis to Milwaukee. This is the direct way up I-55 from St. Louis. I’m not sure if we’re going straight up there or if we’ll divert to the Chicago area on the way.
Our main destination is the new Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.
Anybody know any good places to eat or special sights you’d recommend… particularly in the Milwaukee area? We’re also thinking about Galena Illinois and/or Gary Indiana. I guess it all depends on the weather, how far we’ll stray from the direct route. (Who knows, I might even chicken out and take the car.)
I’ll try to post in the evenings. We should be home Sunday night.
Jonco:
Sorry, I can’t help you with the food portion of your trip but I recommend this website for the sightseeing portion.
Have fun and be careful.

Somewhere just over the border is the Jelly Belly factory. Can’t remember the name of the town, but I was staying in Waukegan (a suburb of North Chicago, near Gurnee) and it only took about a half-hour to get to it from there. Kinda cheesy, but sort of fun…and you can buy a buttload of Jelly Bellys in all kinds of flavors. 🙂
unless your name is snake plisken, i would avoid Gary Indiana.
Don’t forget your bulletproof vest if you’re gong to Gary, Indiana. Stray bullets are a problem.
If you want a truly local bar experience, go to Wolski’s Tavern on Pulaski Street. If you want some of the best bbq I’ve had in Milwaukee, try Sabor Brazilian Churrascaria on Water Street. Sabor is expensive but it’s worth experiencing if you like bbq. If you want a truly unique food experience, look for the Safe House. It’s a spy-themed restaurant off an alley by the Pabst theatre downtown. It’s inexpensive, fun, and has good food. If you go there, look for the exit hidden in a phone booth in the back. It’s a hoot.
…and watch out for Harold Hill…
If you go through Rockford on the way to Galena, check out Anderson Gardens in Rockford (if you like Japanese Gardens, these are some of the nicest).
A trip into Chicago might be worth it for the ride along Lake Shore Drive.
You HAVE to visit the Safe House. Coolest bar in the world!
The Jelly Belly place is in my hometown of Kenosha WI. right off Hyw 31. It is a short tour in a cart. This is a not where they manufacture the candy, but a storage facility. They have a fun little shop. It is a little corny, but fun if you want to feel like a kid in a candy store.
I miss going to Kopps in Milwaukee for custard & burgers.

Thanks for the suggestions. We made it to Milwaukee. Only hit about an hour or rain… then some mist for a while, but not bad.
Going to do the HD museum tomorrow (Friday) and then probably the Safe House. It sounds neat.
Will post later tonight. Going to dinner now.
Steny’s at 2nd & National just south of downtown is biker friendly (no colors) and has the best bloody marys I’ve ever had!
