Oriental, for no good reason that i can see, has derogatory overtones in American english.In British english, ‘Asian’ is generally used to refer to people of the Indian sub-continent, whereas those countries further to the east are generally referred to as ‘Far-Eastern’, or somewhat less commonly ‘Oriental’
Political correctness is all too often unnecessary stupidity.
In most of the rest of the world there is no such taboo. This would explain the common site of hotels and businesses in the “Orient” using the word “Oriental” in their names.
asian is more politically correct than oriental.
