Siouxsie Sioux’s cryptic lyrics are an ode to actress and sex icon Jayne Mansfield — using the actress’ catchword “divoon”, referring to her heart-shaped swimming pool and her love of champagne and parties, and to the grisly automobile accident which claimed her life in 1967.

tragic untimely demise at the hands of a semi trailer on a foggy backroad outside of New Orleans one night. The car she was riding in slammed into the back of the trailer and submarined beneath it, with the end result being that the deck of the trailer nearly decapitated the lass, her boyfriend, and the gentleman driving her Buick. Amazingly enough, her 3 children in the backseat were unscathed, probably because of their lack of height.

In part due to the publicity surrounding her death, the DOT mandated a low-clearance bumper be installed on all semi trailers.

Commonly known as the DOT bumper, it’s also known as the Mansfield bumper.

I’ve found a site (SlideBoom.com) that will allow me to embed a PowerPoint presentation and it retains most of the animations, audio and video. There are a couple of audio clips that don’t play at the proper speed (they’re real slow). I think you can hear them OK but you can’t tell who’s saying them so that makes it harder.

This is a presentation we did back in February. I’ve removed the question slides to save time and space. The answer slides have the questions on them. All you have to do it hit the right arrow key to view the answer or move onto the next slide. You also need to hit the right arrow to hear the clip once the slide is on screen. In other words if in doubt, click the right arrow key.

We normally have handouts for some of our categories, so I created a slide with the data that would be on a handout. You might want to print that slide out (if you can) or copy the choices down to facilitate playing the quiz.

Also keep in mid that this was done locally here in St. Louis so we might have some St. Louis area questions that would be hard to guess if you don’t live here.

I’ve been messing around with trying to embed a PowerPoint into a blog post, but it doesn’t look like I can do that without spending $100 or more.

I uploaded one of the ten categories of our trivia to a site that will play it. Sort of a host site and it’s free. To be able to embed it into a post I have to have the Pro version and it’s $190 a year. Let’s try and see how this free version works.

The best way to play it is to click the link and once the presentation is there then click on the full screen option in the lower right corner. After than you can use the left and right arrow to move forward. I’ve removed all of the question only slides so what you’re seeing is the questions and answers. You see the answer by going to the next slide.

The topic is Album Art. You will see ten albums (one at a time) with the identifying graphics removed. Try to guess what the album is before clicking the next slide – where the answer will be revealed.

Happy 189th birthday to the state of Missouri

It was on this day, August 10, in 1821 that the state of Missouri was admitted to the Union. Missouri is called the “Show Me State,” a motto dating back to the 1890s and a speech where Congressman Willard Vandiver declared: “I come from a country that raises corn and cotton, cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me.”

For the past several decades, the mean center of the population of the United States has been in Missouri.

Missouri is the center of America in other ways, too: St. Louis, Missouri, is considered the farthest west of America’s Eastern cities, and Kansas City, Missouri, is thought of as the farthest east of America’s Cities of the West. In the past, Missouri was a Southern state; now it’s generally thought of as a Midwestern state.

It’s what’s called a “bellwether state” in politics. Missouri has voted for every winning U.S. presidential candidate since 1904, with just two exceptions: the 1956 election and the 2008 election.

Missouri was settled by German brewers and has always had among the most lenient drinking laws in the nation. When Prohibition fever swept the rest of the nation, Missouri never enacted statewide prohibition. State law specifically bans arrests for public intoxication. Open containers of alcohol are permitted in moving vehicles (passengers can drink).

Missourians count among their ranks: Mark Twain, Langston Hughes, T.S. Eliot, Sara Teasdale, Tennessee Williams, William S. Burroughs, William Least Heat Moon, Joseph Pulitzer, J. William Fulbright, Walt Disney, Walter Cronkite, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Jesse James.
