Mexico reconquers California…

Absolute ad
The billboard and press campaign, created by advertising agency
Teran\TBWA  and now running in Mexico, is a colorful map depicting what the Americas might look like in an “Absolut” — i.e., perfect — world.

The U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war of 1848 when California, as we now know it, was Mexican territory and known as Alta California.

Following the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo saw the Mexican territories of Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México ceded to the United States to become modern-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. (Texas actually split from Mexico several years earlier to form a breakaway republic, and was voluntarily annexed by the United States in 1846.)

  1. It’s funny how they don’t seem to want the countries south of them, just the one with the preexisting infrastructure.

  2. During the twenty something years between Mexican independence from Spain and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico did indeed clam Alta California. However, the people of California wanted nothing to do with Mexico, and instead wanted — in order — 1) to be part of the Spanish empire again; 2) to be part of the United States (negotiations were already under way); and 3) independence.

That California was ever part of Mexico is a fantasy. Mexico never had the consent of the governed, and never had the ability to defend it against all who wanted it, namely the Californios themselves, the British, the Russians and the United States.

Also: Mexicans were sent to Alta California during the Spanish colonial period mainly as punishment or out of religious sacrifice. They didn’t want anything to do with it. Now that Americans have turned California into the 11th largest economy in the world, Mexico is all like, “hey, that’s supposed to be ours.”

Keep dreaming, Amigos. If you really believe land gained by military conquest should be returned to its previous owners, then go right ahead. I’m sure Guatemala would LOVE to have Chiapas back.

  3. . . . I’m not too sure I get this, it already looks like that around here! Only difference is that they forgot to invade Louisiana too.

  4. Larry, don’t take it too seriously. In an Absolut world, the United States would own all oil producing regions of the world and I’m sure there will be Arabs proclaiming Jihad on us for that when the ad is really didn’t mean to offend anyone. Quit being a jihadist.

  5. “If you really believe land gained by military conquest should be returned to its previous owners, then go right ahead.”

could someone please explain this to palestonians?
