Weekend Open Mic

Weekend open micForecast Feb 8

Weather:  This is typical February weather.  It can fluctuate from the single digits to the 30s and 40s.  Mix in a little snow and you have February in the Midwest.  Spring training starts this week so better weather is about a month away for us.

Downsizing:  We’ve been looking at smaller houses as it’s time to downsize and get back to a single story house because…. well, we aren’t getting any younger.  We’re also looking for a place with a nice fenced yard for the dogs so they can go outside more. That also means that we’re in the process of de-cluttering our home and packing up lots of stuff, getting rid of other stuff and everything that entails.

I’ll miss the great view overlooking the river and the deer that frequently make a presence in our yard.  We also have good neighbors and they’ll be missed too, but things change and people move on.

That’s it from B&P Headquarters.  What’s going on in your world?

  1. We used to know Spring was coming by monitoring the warmer temps coming up from St. Louis 🙂 We also decided a ranch/one level was the way to go when house hunting, for the very same reasons. Many (younger) friends are wishing they’d done the same way earlier. Less storage, but then you get rid of ‘too much stuff’ accumulated over the years… I wish you the best of luck finding a new home that will meet your needs, yet I WILL SO MISS your river views and deer.

  2. An incredible first 20 minutes of play, Liverpool blowing past top of the table Arsenal. Reds have a commanding 4 nil half time lead.

  3. It’s a sad day for anyone who is a fan of Flappy Bird, the wildly addictive free game that’s the top download in the app store. The creator is overwhelmed by all the attention it’s getting and is taking the game down. I’m sure he’s getting a lot of people asking him to make it easier. I’ve yet to get past 5 pipes. Grrrr!

Here’s a guy who’s found a way to beat the game (some NSFW language)…

  4. We decluttered last weekend. Painting this weekend. Our house was built in the early 70’s, and they used aluminum wiring. Well now if the insurance company finds out that you have aluminum wiring, they will cancel your insurance. Also, you can’t sell your house with it. So for the past 2 weeks, I have been putting 6 inch pigtails of copper to every piece of aluminum wiring in the house, in and outside. Every light, switch, plug, every connection. You have to use special connectors, along with a anti-oxidant compound (goop). While I had every switch and plug off, I replaced with all new. While I had every light off, I replaced with new lighting. We had to get an electrical permit to do the job. The government electrical inspector has been in and gave us a certificate of inspection, saying the job is 100% done. It is a big job, as we have a 2000sf 2 story house. We were planning on this for awhile so we watched sales and got every light on sale. We are planning on selling and retiring back east so getting everything ready.

  5. Dont know if I mentioned it before or not, but I am training once again for the Boston Marathon. This weekend’s long run was a 17 miler.
Some of you might remember my story from last year(http://andsoitburns.blogspot.com/2013/04/please-read.html).

Training is going well and I am so looking forward to crossing that finish line for the first time in my life. It will be a dream come true!

    – Just thought I would share…. 🙂

  6. Update from SoCal: we actually had some measurable rain. The bad news is it wasn’t even .i”.

Jonco, sorry to hear you’re leaving your beautiful neighborhood, but as you say, we do get older. Hope you’ll find a great place with all the amenities–especially for the pups!

  7. In Portland it seems to have become Snowacolypse out there. Got about 8 inches of snow. This may not sound like a lot to some but considering we get maybe a fourth of an inch in a year and we have gotten that much in 2 days!
Needless to say, the city is pretty much at a standstill[img][/img]

  8. We have the opposite here in Melbourne, bush fires (wildfires) too close to home, 42C yesterday and an overnight low of 33C, or 91.4F, a record.

  9. Go west old man! 😉

You will find some great new biking roads and scenery out thar!
The PCH has to be on your bucket list.
