Further west than the Hill (i.e. Kirkwood), my grandmother and mother made headcheese every New Year’s Day. I don’t know why, but I remember thinking how gross the whole process was.
I can remember being about 10 or so years old and my dad brought home a pigs head and put it in the sink to clean and “disassemble”. I don’t remember much more that seeing it in the sink and nervously touching it. I think I avoided head cheese for the next 40 years or so. Once I finally got the nerve to try it I actually liked it. I couldn’t look at it but if I put it on crackers or bread and didn’t look at it it was pretty tasty.
Those aren’t “slang words”…I’d say they’re more like “colloquialisms”. There’s a difference. Not much of a difference, but still different.
51 years in Georgia (minus 11 in Ak) I’ve never once heard the term “toboggan” used for a hat…
