Homemade Mosquito Trap

Mosquito trapWorks on Gnats too!

Items needed:

1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
2-liter plastic bottle

1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are drawn to the color black or white.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

Thanks Cari

I wonder how many of those entered the trap from outside, and how many were hatched from eggs laid inside the trap.

  • Mayor of Shekou

I suggest warm water, not hot. Hot water can kill the yeast (learned the hard way making bread).

  • Sider

Yeast makes alcohol from sugar, and I don’t think mosquitos can hatch in alcohol

  • Aaron

Does anyone know how much coverage one of these should have?

  • sean

Does this REALLY work? Has anyone tried it?

    • TimTom

This is all over the web in the last week. There’s no source. And some versions have the same picture but different instructions. It’s quite annoying, as this thing has pushed alternatives out of the way.

Anyway I live in a crazy bad area for mosquitoes, so will try it out myself and report back.

mosquito’s use infrared to detect heat & they are attracted to C02. When yeast is munching on the brown sugar it does two things …. Creates heat & creates C02… Not saying they did not help the buggers get in the bottle for dramatic effect. But “in theory” this should work

  • Big Ron

What keeps them from leaving the trap? Why don’t they just fly right back out?

    • mike

Ron, it works just like a fish trap. They arent smart enough to figure out the small exit. Some may get out on a fluke.

  • sean

I’m going to build a few this week

Every mosquito born in the bottle is one less mosquito born outside the bottle.

Not true… Its dozens! The females are the ones who hunt. And if they dont get their blood supply, they dont lay the eggs

Can someone let me know how well these work, I am really interested in getting rid of the dangerous amount of mosquitos in our yard. Thanks.

  • Zaira

Hey! Is it fine if I’ll use a dry yeast?

    • Craig

      Good question…anyone?

    • Michael

Yeast, dry our liquid, will suffice. Once it gets into the water with the sugar, it will start eating the sugar. Once it eats the sugar, it creates alcohol and CO2.

I can’t believe how stupid more than half you people are. You know nothing about grade school science, you know nothing about mosquitoes, and you know zero about mechanical theory/reasoning. How the hell do you people function?

    • PR

Wow, thanks for the insight. If you have knowledge, why don’t you share. Clearly, your functioning skills are subpar as well, if you troll forums and rip on people.

    • Marilyn Williams

Gee, I’ll bet your mom’s proud of you!

How are your personal relationships Chuck? lol glad I do not know you

My, aren’t you a pleasant one! We could simply use you as a mosquito repellant…you are beyond toxic.

I didnt realize in depth knowledge of mosquitoes was relevant to daily functioning…

I use two (2) oz of lemon amonia and one (1)oz of baby shampoo in a twenty gal hose end sprayer, fill with water. spray bushes and lawn all around your house, wait 6/7 days and do it again. Mo more mosquito’s till fall spray again about sept. Been using this for over 25 years

    • kmcivor

Interesting, Bill. But what, exactly is a 20 gal hose-end sprayer? I’m picturing a huge container on the end of a hose and that just can’t be right. (I don’t use hose-end sprayers, btw) Are you saying you create this 3-oz solution and somehow set the (1 quart?) hose-end sprayer to dispense it in the course of 20 gallons? Just not sure how this works..

  • Chris

I’d be interested in hearing more bill

Remember that any standing water in your yard or garden can turn into a mosquito breeding ground, so get rid of any puddles around your yard. Then, overspray your yard with my Buzz Buster Lemonade: 1 cup of lemon-scented ammonia and 1 cup of lemon-scented dishwashing liquid in a 20 gallon hose-end sprayer, filling the balance of the sprayer jar with warm water. Repeat this treatment 3 times a week in the evening, and the little buggers will be history..

I have used this also to trap wasps and bees. I didn’t use the yeast and only a tablespoon of brown sugar.

  • I saw a comment here where the person was wondering if they would be breeding in the bottle. I would say if it has dish detergent in the water they wouldn’t and even if they did they should not be able to survive.

I am going to give this method a try and see how it does here in Moncton, New Brunswick.

  • Marc

Tried this and it did not work at all.
I live in the tropics of South East Asia, and my garden is a mosquito infested hell.
I made this trap a week ago and not 1 mosquito has been captured so far.

  • Debi

Ok, all good comments… I live with horses and cows, near the river and alpha fields.. Does this really work. Plus I have standing water to water the animals….

  • trixie

I made some of these last year and did not find them to work. However I will try again just to be sure.

  • mariejel

it didnt work! i dont know what kind of mosquitoes are here in our place!

  • I took a Dump in mine and it atracked lot of flys!

  • I’ve been pounding a 2 liter of Coke all day so I can give this a try. I’ve never drank this much Coke before. Lets hope it works… or not. I’m not sure I want to go through this again.

  • Eriksutton

Does it work with green squirt pop bottles????

  • Hassan Haffar

HH: i’ve seen this on several websites and i bet none of the people writing about it have tried it. they are just copying what sounds like a good idea from each other. it doesn’t work. i had one for a week and didn’t get even one mosquito in there, not even one and yet they are biting me, even now as i type this.

  • Geko

This DES NOT WORK. I have tested it thoroughly, I made 13 traps, I live in the jungle and mosquitoes are everywhere (it is rainy season). Not one mosquito trapped in 3 days, The yeast is working, everything smells like a bakery. Don’s waist your time with this, it is complete bogus.

  • Darrell

the 20 gallon end hose sprayer looks like this I believe this is what a few people where talking about

  • Diego

tried it once, following the instructions to the a, and it didn’t catch a single mosquito ever. solid yeast.
