WTF? I click on the button and receive Amazon Kindle ad.

I fed my three dogs Beneful for years without any incidences. I did switch recently because my oldest dog was starting to have a hard time chewing on crunchy dry food. I don’t want to sound like I am defending Purina, but dogs are known to get into stuff that is bad for them.

Yeah, and I wouldn’t have posted this but with hundreds of complaints in a short period of time, it makes you wonder if something changed.

    • Jarrod

The complaints only began about 3 months ago. Sounds like a formula change is responsible…

      • Aflatoxin contamination? It would explain why symptoms only started in December after the summer drought when 80% of corn samples tested positive for Aflatoxins due to mold contamination. The FDA’s response in six states, was to RAISE THE LIMIT on the amount of allowable Aflatoxins in corn used for animal feed. Unbelievable.. the limits are set for a reason! Actually, humans tolerate this substance very well.. WAY better than dogs and cats. The drought of 2006 produced the winter run of Aflatoxin deaths.. remember that?

BTW Beneful dry food only contains 4% “real” meat.. and at the most 4% “real” dried vegetables. The rest is mainly junk like Animal Byproducts and Corn..

If Feed Corn (the hard, floury corn rather than nice succulent “Sweet” corn) .. and Byproducts are so good for dogs then why does the packaging not show these? Instead of which, the packaging shows nice fresh veggies and chicken breasts or slices of nice lean steak!

I’ll tell you why.. it is because most people believe the spiel from a manufacturer and don’t BOTHER to look at the ingredients!! Beef Flavored food only has to contain 4% Beef.. same with Chicken flavored food… betcha didn’t know that!

Beneful Ingredients (I have starred the ingredients you should avoid)
**Ground yellow corn**, **chicken-by-product meal**, **corn gluten meal**, **whole wheat flour**, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), **rice flour**, beef (4%), **soy flour**, Minerals (tricalcium phosphate, salt, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), **sugar**, **sorbitol**, water, **animal digest**, phosphoric acid, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, niacin, Vitamin B-12, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, **menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity)**, Vitamin D-3], **added colors (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2),** DL-Methionine, glyceryl monostearate, garlic oil.

To sum up, virtually all cat and dog food you see in places like Walmart and Food Lion, Krogers etc.. falls into the “junkfood” category. Check the ingredients and see what I mean.

We stopped feeding our dog Beneful a couple of months ago and her constant GAS has disappeared. I can’t believe the difference going to a more natural food has made. We feed her Taste of the Wild now for her dry food.

We always pre-soften our dogs meal with hot water and allow it to cool before giving it to the dogs. One should never ever make a step-change in a dogs diet suddenly switching from one type to another, The sudden change can wreak havoc with a dogs digestive system. Many of the symptoms being reported (lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea weight loss and listlessness)closely resemble those of the Coeliac condition which affects dogs in the same way as it does humans. If you notice any change at all in your dogs behaviour or health after changing its food, go back to the original food. With dry dog foods containing ever increasing amounts of grain based ingredients wheat, barley and rye more and more dogs may begin to suffer signs of Gluten intolerance. My own pet theory is that if you must use dry dog foods (like me!) use only products using rice as the filler rather than wheat…

Wonder if it can be a combination of ingredients and a SHOCK COLLAR. Notice one of the pics of the dog and he is wearing one….personally I don’t want to shock my family members, which my dog is a member.

  • smittypap

This. This is why TV news sucks as a whole. “We don’t know that the dog food killed our dog, but we’re willing to drag their name around in the mud anyway.”

    • Jonco

If it were just a few complaints I would not have mentioned it. But when there are hundreds of complaints don’t you think people might want to be aware of a potential problem?

Beneful is one of the worst foods out there for dogs. Meat isn’t even the first ingredient. You can use a site like to see how the food you feed your pet ranks. Look for a grain free food. If you must feed kibble, soak it in water until it’s soft. Crunchy kibble does not clean your dogs teeth any more than granola cleans ours. The truth is out there. Research what you’re feeding your pet before it’s too late.

Well stated Goddess. One of our doggies had kidney failure due to the food we were feeding him. By the grace of an Angel and proper food, he is still with us in good shape. It was touch and go for many months though and heartbreaking to watch. Very painful for your pet to go through.

“… We assumed that you could go to the store. That you you could purchase any brand of dog food. And your pet would be ok…”

Welcome to America lady. Home of Caveat Emptor. Where the only thing that matters is how much money they can get out of you before you die. Do you really think they give a rats ass about your dog? Heck, they don’t even care about you.

  • Joel

Beneful is cheap shit food anyway. Even if it isn’t poisoning dogs, people should spend a little extra cash if they actually care about their dogs and get something better, like Wellness or Innova.

  • Is Beneful by Purina Killing and Sickening our Dogs? Please join this closed group and find out: BTW, just think on this when you wonder why crappy dog food is not pulled off the shelves. Smoking causes 1 in 5 deaths in the United States each year. Fact! Yet cigarettes can still be legally bought. Do NOT depend on the global food industry to make healthy food for your animals. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS! There should be NO Corn, NO Byproducts, NO Soy, NO Wheat, NO Propylene Glycol, NO Glycerin, NO BHA/BHT, NO colouring, NO Sugar/Molasses, NO Anumal Digest, NO Animal Fats..No “Animal” anything for that matter and NO Meat and Bonemeal! Three of the first 5 ingredients should be a named meat, a named liver, or a named meat meal. Ideally, there should be no grain at all but Barley and Millet are amongst the better ones. US-grown rice except for Californian is loaded with Arsenic so avoid rice where possible. Some grain free foods contain potato or sweet potato after the meat ingredients. Of these two, sweet potato is the best. BTW I buy Taste of the Wild, Orijen, Before Grain. Think they’re expensive? Well, my furfriends eat between 1/2 to 2/3 of what they used to on a filler-laden commercial food.. such as Ol’ Roy, IAMS, Beneful, Eukeneba, Scince Diet, Pedigree etc.

Whether or not this food is making dogs sick, it is crap!! You wouldn’t feed your kids pizza and chips and candy everyday, would you? This is the equivalent. Rule of thumb…if you can buy it at the grocery store or a big box store (target, walmart), it’s gonna be crap!!

  • beneful made dog sick

Beneful is making dogs sick. It made mine very sick, also personally know others who had the same issues. This is a horrible food. Some ask how do I know it was beneful. At first I did not, but when my dog was off of beneful within a day or so he became better. After a week pretty much cleared up. Put him back on beneful and again illness. He was not a new beneful user. There is something wrong with the current bags of beneful. Do not take the chance. Do not continue to feed your pet something that could kill them. If you love your pet, do not feed them beneful.

I’ve fed my 3 Boston Terriers Beneful all of their lives. They are 7,6, and 5 yrs old. My sons Pit Bull, 2 yrs old also eats it. In the last month or so, they have all thrown up a few times each. No other symptoms, except my female Boston has developed a hematoma in her ear, and I don’t know if that has anything to do with the food. I’ll be returning the unopened bag to the store, and will start feeding a healthier brand. Can I just switch over, or should I wean them over? Thanks for all of your comments. I love my babies and thought I was giving them good food. 🙂

Too bad the station didn’t wait for the test results….NO EVIDENCE that Beneful was to blame. How sad, that unfounded accusations got this far. Maybe there IS something wrong with the food, maybe not. There is as of right now, no factual evidence that there is. Maybe it is junky food, maybe not. People, investigate autoimmune disease, allergies, etc. Don’t let internet hype make decisions for you! Be wary of groups in which you need to be “approved” to join.
