OMG, seriously, Richard? I’m sorry, please don’t take this personally, but my comment was going to be (and still is) that they say we get the TV we deserve and that I was seriously afraid of what the popularity of these shows said about us as a country. There are only so many hours in our lives and I can think of so many better ways to spend them than on chewing gum for the brain. But to each his own.
As soon as producers figured out you can make TV shows without paying actors, writers, effects people, etc, etc they all clinked their champagne glasses together and had a big laugh. I’m convinced that with the correct formula, you can make a TV show about literally anything.
Show an establishing shot of something with some rad rock music chords – cut to interior (or exterior, doesn’t matter) – show several rapid fire shots of stuff or people – with lots of camera movement. Someone will tell us what’s going on with a voice-over, no matter how boring it is and then we’ll see just what they just explained. After a few minutes of that, we see a shot of one of the ‘cast’ members in a static setting telling us more about what’s going on. Then another rapid-fire succession of images – complete with quick zoom-ins and fast-pans and some generic rock music. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I’m guilty as charged. I regularly watch about fifteen of the shows shown on the clip, and yes, I do enjoy them.
