As the owner of a Ram pickup, I plan to stay far away from the uniformed vigilantes in southern California… What the Hell is wrong with them? Are they planning on shooting everyone in a pickup, and then investigate? “Oops, my bad.”

  • Cops can’t tell a Nissan Titan from a Toyota Tacoma or a Honda Ridgeline?

I understand the tense situation, but dayam!

Police are so gun crazy. Didnt they cross check number plate? Or pull car over themselves or even think to communicate with the people in the car at all first? Look at the bullet holes, they cant say they fired warning shots. How can america expect there citizens to have proper gun control when there police act like nut cases.

    • hcmom

In (very moderate) defense of the police, he’d already changed license plates once, so cross-checking that wouldn’t have really been helpful. However, do not in any way confuse this with me ACTUALLY defending the police in this instance.

To get to work yesterday, I had to pass where the ex-cop first shot at cops. It made me very nervous to be driving around police with their guns drawn, and I don’t even drive a truck.

      • uhm hum

Well, they would of been able to find out at least that the plates matched that vehicle and were not mismatched by swapping. But then again, if they can’t tell the difference between grey and bright blue what can you expect from police?

        • hcmom

But then they would have had to wait to shoot, and the dangerous newspaper deliverers might have gotten away!

A couple of weeks back I was defending people that have guns for defense against not being looked at as being crazy, scary, violent, and quick to use lethal force. I will have to say police hide behind their guns and badges and they are scary, violent, quick to use lethal force, and likely have some mental issues.. perhaps I shouldn’t of jumped into that conversation then.

I mean really, what kind of logical reasoning is “oh look it’s a truck, shoot it!”. I’m sure after an internal investigation, perhaps a couple of weeks of paid vacation for some officers, and a couple of weeks spinning the facts and making sure all the officers stories are the same we will hear the “truth” and find out they were responding appropriately to the situation.

Watching the story I can almost understand the case of mistaken identity. Doesn’t matter though, there’s a lawsuit coming up.

Did anyone here read Dorner’s manifesto? It gets a bit goofy in places. Towards the end, you can definitely see he’s pandering to anyone he thinks can help his case. They’re looking for him here in San Diego. The helicopters have been buzzing the sky all morning.

  • And yet the idea of cops in schools for protection is such a great idea these days.

    • Ted

That’s about what I was thinking. If they don’t fire these guys, they might make them school resource officers.

My roommate just told me someone she works with was at the 24 Hour Fitness downtown this morning when the cops burst in with guns drawn and arrested someone that resembled Dorner. Turned out to be the wrong guy. Luckily everyone cooperated and no one got shot. I guess the reason they think he’s in S.D. is because they found an LAPD badge and his wallet by the airport. With him knowing how cops work, this could be misdirection.

This incident happened a block away from a friend’s house. She said the noise of the shooting was terrifying, and the vehicle was shot to pieces. The women’s attorney says the police did not follow procedure. I predict that the 70-year-old mother, who was shot twice, will never have to work again, and that she and her daughter will have a very nice new vehicle. And yes, this is a cautionary tale about guns. Even the best-trained professionals are humans, and subject to human error.

    • hcmom

Y’know… I just somehow expect better of the best-trained professionals, and somehow doubt these cops qualify as that.

Having said that, I also understand that three of their fellow officers had just been shot, one killed, and they were probably very on edge. But still.

Shoot now talk later.I’m so glad to be an Australian. Then again we have some nasty pieces of work in the force too.

  • grumpy

Gotta gun? Might as well use it.

Kinda stupid to have something that you don’t use.

  • Jonco

While this was a terrible and unfortunate event and should NEVER have happened I try to remember there are so many good cops out there who do good work and do their best to try to help their fellow man. There are so many stories that don’t make it into the press that show the compassion and respect law enforcement offices have for the people they’re paid to protect. Hat’s off to those people who do their jobs day in and day out.

    • hcmom

This is quite true. We don’t really hear about buildings that aren’t on fire, yet it happens every day.

  • Mathman54

One piece of irony, on the LA News a Police spokesman made the point that it was important to find Dorner ASAP as he has already proven he is willing to shoot innocent people. In possible defense of Dorner, once the news got out that TWO trucks had been shot up by police because the trucks matched the description of the Dorner truck, Dorner abandoned and burned his truck. That alone should make a lot of drivers breathe a little easier.

In all my life I have never been helped by the police when the victim of a crime. They are the first line of troops in the rule by thuggery in America.
