Weekend Open Mic

Weekend open mic

Things are crazy here and I forgot to post a Weekend Open Mic this morning.  So here it is… better late than never.

Website update:  One of my websites (NB) is down and has been down since late Thursday .  It had been receiving an onslaught of comment spam.  Upon further investigation it was discovered that thousands of spam comments coming from China have flooded the site every day for the last ten days or so.  It got so bad that the traffic was affecting other sites hosted on the same server so they had to take the site down.  That spam never makes it to my control panel so I didn’t know what the problem was.  But an inside look at the log files indicated that as the problem  It seems that the CAPTCHA spam protection didn’t do a damn bit of good.  I still see about the same amount of spam as I did before.   I’m hoping to eliminate that in the near future.

I have enlisted the aid of a man much wiser than I in matters of websitery magic.  We’re going to end up banning comments from China which will hopefully solve the problem.  People in China will still be able to view the site, just not comment.  We’re hoping all of this is resolved very soon and things get back to normal on NB.  I’m very sorry for the inconvenience this has cause the readers.

Also, I’d like to thank the few people who found the generosity in their hearts to make donations which help keep me sane during trying times like this.

Cable Internet:  So far my new cable internet service is skipping along with out a problem whatsoever (knock on wood).  The guys were out to bury the cable yesterday that the installer had strewn across the ground but they’re going to have to come back next week with equipment to tunnel it under my driveway.

New keyboard:  I purchased a Logitech G710+ keyboard and am very happy with it.  It’s got lights and sh*t.  It’s designed for heavy duty gaming which I rarely (read as never) do. But most importantly it’s very comfortable and I like the way it feels under my fingers.  It has macro keys too which I’ve programmed to help with blogging.

Weather: We’re looking at 60°F+ temperatures predicted for the next few days.  The January thaw will also bring some showers.

That’s about all from here, what’s going on in your world?

I’ve been pleased with my cable internet. Before cable www I had Bell South DSL and the cable deal is much faster. The only problem is infrequent outages which my DSL never incurred. Doesn’t that CAPCHA deal only work for bots? If you’ve got real human spammers spamming, they’ll never go away?

We had a high of 21 yesterday with about 1/4″ of ice. Today it’s 58 and sunny here in western NC.

I’m 3 weeks into recovery of having C3 fixed and adding it to the mix as now C3 through C6 are one big happy family held together with rods, screws and a plate. Flexiril and opiates are my best friends of late. I’m looking forward to getting back to my part time (40 hrs a week) job selling cell phone plans and accessories at Wal-Mart Monday. Laying around doing nothing makes me lazy . . . .

    Hey Jonco,

Not much happening here but an ice storm approaches. That should make driving fun tomorrow.

I will be just across the river from you for a few days the first part of February, so maybe we can meet.

  • The rain has just come down so heavily here that the snow has pretty much all gone – which is a good thing.
I’m doing an online course (Introduction to Databases) from Stanford – they have a few free courses you can do and you can go through the past courses and watch the clips and do the exercises (but you don’t get to interact with the lecturer on the old ones obviously). I’ve fallen behind and have a lot of videos to watch before a deadline Monday. I also have a website that I’m working on for someone, and a few songs in the pipeline that I’m flitting between after learning some new techniques with my DAW.
On top of all that, I finally got round to reading the books that a friend bought me for my birthday (The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie) and I find I can’t put the bloody things down. So all in all, not enough hours in the weekend :)
    Have a great weekend B&Pers.

  • Still colder than a witch’s twitter-feed here in CT.

I have an ad quiz for this week. You’ll have to take a look and see if you can guess the product and the name of the spokesperson.

Almost spring like weather for us here. Everything around me is imploding but the weather is holding up nicely. I hope the sh!t show is over soon and next month will be better.
Hope you’re all having a good weekend!

Our hot weather has given way to much-needed rain. I’m babysitting a golden retriever, and even after the rain stops, he manages to get REALLY wet all over.

  • Running a website is hard, isn’t it, Jonco? One of mine just got arbitrarily deleted by the hosting company – and even though they admit that deleting it was their fault, they DON’T HAVE A BACKUP of it so they cannot restore it? Silly me thinking that the hosting company has backups available in case they screw up. Arrrgh!

    Of course, I didn’t have a backup either…:^(
