I have decided to make a change in my media services. I’m moving to cable TV, Internet and telephone. It’s all happening today, so I’ll be out of commission for a while. Hopefully not too long. They say they can get it done in 2 to 3 hours. I don’t know how that’ll be possible. I think the nearest cable is down the street a bit and they have to run all new wiring. I’m hooking up 4 TV’s plus the internet. The phone will be easier because they can tie into my phone wiring at the side of the house.
I know people have horror stories about cable but I’ve heard them about satellite also. There’s no contract so if I’m unhappy I can switch back. Besides I’m saving a lot because of their introductory offers. Even after the introductory period I’ll still be paying about the same as I was plus I’ll have more services.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed Jonco, I’ve been very happy with cable services for years. So, good luck with that.
I have cable for all 3 too and like it, only 5 mb download but it all works good
I better get more than 5mb download. I get that with DSL. I’m supposed to get 10 X that. LOL I’ll be happy with 10 or more.
With Comcast I have download speeds of at least 12 Mbps, and with all services that speed will vary depending on online traffic. So, it’s not a constant but it’s a good starting place.
the dish only goes out when its a bad thunder storm and raining really hard Im pretty happy with it
I’ve always been weary of internet phone in the case of what if you have an emergency and you need 911, but your internet is out. BUT I’m sure that’s just me worrying too much. Good luck!
The phone isn’t thru the internet as I understand it. It’s just from the same company. It’s not VOIP service, it’s regular phone service. I had DSL and phone before and they came through the same cable, so if something happened to the line I was out of both anyway. That’s when a cell phone comes in handy.
Well they came and they couldn’t do the installation because there was no box to hook into. I’m down near the end of my street and no one down here has cable. There is a box in the lot next door to mine but there’s no connectors in it, just bare wires. So the wires were run underground and a box was installed so that when a customer signed up (me) they could put the connectors into the box. That’s a different crew. They’ll do that in the next couple of days and we’re rescheduled for installation next Wednesday morning.
And now , you have entered cable hell. No one can do anything because that’s the job of a different crew.
AT&T was the same way. One crew hooked it up and another crew came out to bury the line. Unfortunately my line layed across the road and a snow came and the snowplow ripped it up before the burial crew could do its job. That created a do-over…. and I was without phone or internet for a day or two.
My Directv dish is a very accurate weather forecaster. When it goes out, I know that a heavy rain is coming within five minutes…
And it does that before the rain hits. About the time the rain actually hits the TV will come back on. What’s up with that?
Probably because the outage is caused by the signal being blocked at an angle by the storm cloud. When the cloud is overhead, the blockage is gone. Yeah, I know…TMI.
Having moved around the country, it’s amazing to test different cable markets and experience the different satellite providers. Even the same company had different results in different areas.
Honestly, nothing is perfect and it just matters where you want your audio/video stress to be — I have spent more than my fair share of time on customer service lines with all of them… just part and parcel of the package deal.
I had cable and wasn’t really happy with the bandwidth. They used to use a shared bandwidth model wherein X MB would be provided to a particular area and when you were the only one on, you had the full X. As users came home and got on their systems, it became X / no. of users. More like a hub methodology than a switch. I went to Dish and we started having a lot of storms. As soon as the storm came our way, the service went out just when they were getting ready to say “Rick, seek shelter.” I’ve gone to ATT Uverse now and it’s been great; none of the interruptions, solid fast service, and all the services I need.
I wish I could get uverse but it’s not available where i live. Maybe someday.
I’ve had cable since 1988. It’s changed names about 4 times, but we have fewer outages than with a satellite. I worked in a house that had DISH & if the wind blew wrong, the TV was out. My only complaint is the customer service. After 4:30 it goes to India and while they may speak English, they do not speak American. If you have a problem, make sure you document the date, time called & what the problem was. Comcast will give credit on your bill if you have proper documentation & the problem was not solved correctly.
Good advice. Thanks.
