In the event of a moon landing failure…

With the passing of Neil Armstrong over the weekend, here’s a copy of the speech President Richard Nixon would have delivered had the moon landing FAILED!  It’s dated July 18, 1969 and the familiar name (if you paid any attention to the Watergate scandal) H.R. Haldeman appears at the top.  Eerie!!!!

  1. WOW. I had never really considered what if it hadn’t worked because it was over before I was born. Eerie is just the right word for that. “widows-to-be” got me.


    • I agree. The space race was over long before I was born. But it was very “eerie” to think how long they could have survived before the inevitable happened.


  2. For real? Probably won’t know for sure until it gets to some pawn shop in Vegas.

    I’m sure one of these was written for every manned space launch.


  3. Could definitely be true. My job is Emergency Preparedness and part of contingency operations and continuity of services is ensuring you have all situations covered. There’s probably another procedures document that says “Notify press to meet on the White House Lawn. Assemble the Marine Corps Band (called the President’s Own). Recall Congress. yada, yada, yada”


  4. I came across this speech and Safire’s remarks about it a few days ago. While doing some searching I found something similar for a D-Day failure. So I’m sure it’s a common practice.

    General Eisenhower’s speech:

    “Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air, and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone.”



  5. The opening line sounds like that line in that film Apollo 18; pretty awesome Sci Fi film, set back in the roaring 60s. Space Arms war and all that, with a Death Space with a touch of Alien (first film) but in a retro early-landings-on-the-moon scenario.A lot of mental breakdown, a lot of insane babble that sounds so poetic and creepy. Worth watching. Might not wanna watch before sleep time, though.
