How often should you wash your clothes?

Real Simple put together an expert consensus on how frequently you need to launder key warm-weather clothing pieces—barring stains or especially sticky days, that is.

Here are just a few of their recommendations: Wash-jeans_300

  • Jeans: After 4 to 5 wears
  • Dress Pants: After 4 to 5 wears
  • Jackets and Blazers: After 5 to 6 wears
  • Khaki Shorts and Pants:  After 2 to 3 wears
  • Pajamas: After 3 to 4 wears
  • Skirts: After 4 to 5 wears
  • Swimsuits: After every wear
  • Tops and Dresses: After 1 to 3 wears
  • T-Shirts, Tanks and Camisoles: After every wear
  • Bras: After 3 to 4 wears

Maybe I’m a clean freak, but the only time I’ll wear a pair of jeans more than once or twice is when I’m on a motorcycle trip and don’t have room to pack more.  I guess I use a lot more water and detergent than most people.  Once in a while I’ll change clothes in the evening and then I might put the same clothes on the next day, but otherwise it’s clean duds for me every day.

Thanks Sander

  1. This list is definitely for women. The guys would be- Jeans: when they are to stiff to get on, shirts: when they are too stiff to get on, underwear: well, you get the idea…

  2. since i wear a uniform to work i quite often will wear a shirt or pants more than once before washing but that’s because if i’m wearing “normal” clothes its usually not for more than a few hours at a time to run errands or go to court.

  3. LOL. I didn’t realize you saw me post this on facebook and then put it on B&P. But this originally stemmed from an incident about 2 years ago with a coworker. He came to work wearing these ugly brown and yellow shorts. When I asked him what’s up, he said he hadn’t had a chance to do laundry so out comes the clothes you’d never wear normally. In conversation he said he WON’T ever wear something again until it’s been washed. Keep in mind, we work a white collar job. We don’t get dirty, nor sweat or anything. I had asked around and it was pretty much half and half on those who wear once and wash regardless and those who wear a few times and wash (unless they’re visibly dirty).

  4. I get dirty a lot at work so I wash my work shirts after one time. Pants I wear a couple times. I don’t really have pajama shirts so I’ll wear a t-shirt that I wore the day before and use that as my night shirt.

  5. How do you keep track of which pair of jeans you wore three times, and which other pair twice? You would have to catalog your closet and make a spreadsheet to follow this regimen.
