I laughed out loud for the way this guy speaks. And i am in deep thought about what he said. He made quite the point! How intelligent do we think we are? Are we smart enough? Well, i think einstein put it best: ‘Only two things are endles, the universe and human stupidity. And i am not sure about the universe’.

  • Arramus42

How the hell does a 2% difference in genetics translate into 1% difference in intelligence. Guess I’m sick and tired of intellectual dishonesty. The logic here was laughable!

  • Doc Savage

*facepalm* The same DNA but I have 100% more common sense than him…

  • p1t0

    I feel dumb now…

  • Scott-O

@Arramus42- okay, then please explain his error in terms that we mere mortals can comprehend oh mighty one.

@Doc- get over yourself. Common sense isn’t nearly as common as pomposity and self aggrandizement, now is it?

I enjoyed it. He introduced some ideas that are interesting to me and my fellow worms. I might ponder them as I sort through the refuse that you ubermenschen provide.

It kind of sounds like the conversions that drunk college kids have late at night in the dorms. Or maybe it was the stoned college kids.

“We are such more intelligent than any critter on earth; what if there was a critter that much more intelligent than us somewhere out there?” He did get one thing right: communication will be dang near impossible until we figure out basic pantomime and other ways to teach them our language and vice versa. It would take a long time, as I imagine it took the first European settlers to learn the languages here in America when they got here–and how long it took the Native Americans to learn English (or Spanish or Portuguese or Norse or whatever).

Did you ever noticed that brilliant people and career criminals all share one thing. They are called by their first, middle and last names…

  • Gary

I very much enjoyed it. Whether he’s profound or intellectually dishonest, he at least caused you to think a bit. You can’t go wrong by giving your ol’ noodle a bit of exercise…………Occasionally!

  • Actually our DNA isn’t that far off from pig DNA, or rat DNA.. even plant DNA. And this guy is to intelligence what Richard Simmons is to heterosexuality.

I ‘ll quote one passage for you ( saving your precious time from reading the whole page)
“Although there has been frequent speculation about his sexual orientation Simmons has never publicly discussed his sexuality.”

it is not because somebody acts eccentricly that you have to invent ( accuse ?) a ” possible homosexuality”.

If you wanted to accuse NdGT of being an idiot or sth else, then… DO IT ! don’t spread free insults or accusations!

oh , and a last thing : Trolling is an art , and you failed at it. I also guess you have more in common with pigs, rats , or plants , than only 95% of common DNA. ( i guess you didn’t pick these for no reason)

  • JD

This was entirely flawed logic. He’s assuming our difference in DNA is entirely invested in intelligence. DNA doesn’t work that way. It’s clear he’s an astrophysicist, because he’d be laughed out of any biological institution he entered with logic like that. Not to say he isn’t an entertaining speaker, but he clearly doesn’t understand the basics of genetics.

    • Joey

I agree with JD. DNA is only a blueprint for making of proteins and has nothing to do with intelligence as such. I think Tyson is a bit too far out on thin ice here. He assumes to be knowledgeable about things not even the most prominent researchers of cognitive science quite understand.

    • iamevilhomer

he may be oversimplifying DNA. 1% of 3 billion DNA base pairs of the human genome is a lot. where does sentience lie? if it doesn’t come from that 1%, JD, where does it come from?

the point was our hubris. aliens would not want to speak to us. i doubt stephen hawking would want to talk to me and he’s way more than 1% smarter than me.

  • paul in boca

    Hmmm. “Drooling, blathering idiots…”

  • LOL

What he said did give me something to think about as I work today. I found it amusing that everyone on this comment board who thought he wasn’t intelligent and sounded like an idiot never once gave any type of intelligent responses. What did you contribute?

  • YupYup

    @Arramus42

Did you fail math in high school? not study? There’s this thing called exponential. What he’s talking about is how much exponentially we are more intelligent than chimps could be increased when moving an additional percentage forward. Sorry, but your simplistic understanding of math doesn’t apply here. :)
