Perpetuum Jazzile – Toto’s “Africa” like you’ve never heard it before

I received this note:

My name is Mojca, I come from a tiny country in the middle of Europe called Slovenia (neighbouring countries are Croatia, Italy, Hungary and Austria – so you can imagine easier where we are).

Anyway, I go to your website daily and I really like it. I also find some awesome site through your site (failblog, bent objects…). Awesome job you do!

The song – Africa originally from Toto – is performed by a Slowenian jazz choir called Perpetuum Jazzile (yes I am a member :)) and everything you hear is made without instruments.

The post came out on Youtube less than three weeks ago and very soon people from all over the world wanted us to know how much they love it.

We – the choir – are all amateurs and we enjoy making people happy.

So if you like it, share it with others please!

And of course keep on scouring the web so we don’t have to! 🙂

Greeting from Ljubljana, Slovenia

Mojca

My pleasure!  This is just an incredible piece of work!  One of the neatest things I’ve seen in a long time.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks Mojca

  1. That was awesome! Great sound, looked like they enjoy what they’re doing…lots of smiles.
Very nice looking too. Loved the ‘percussion’! Unique! Good luck!

(And a big plus- they don’t dress like condoms!)

  2. I’d hit the blond in the second row wearing the black dress. Hubba-hubba. And oh yeah, the effect was spectacular.

  3. That was fantastic, such an uplifting song with a brilliant way of singing it.
Mojca, (if you happen to read this) would really enjoy seeing more of these posted, I’m sure everyone else must surly agree…
Also, good luck for the future, as I’m pretty certain you guys are going places…

  4. Here’s their website:

Click on the little arrow in the upper right corner to hear “A Day in the Life of a Fool”. Stunning harmonies. Wow!

From their website: “When the voice becomes the instrument…and when the instrument becomes the voice…”
Today, when music is moving into the digital sphere, WE are passionately returning it to the analogue!!”

  5. At the risk of repeating the common sentiment…WOW! Incredible music that they’re making and some very attractive ladies
Jon thanks. Mojca thanks, I hope you’ll be touring the U.S. I’d love to see that in person.

  6. Mojca – that was cool. I will have to check your website to see if I can buy an mp3 of this song cover, or keep the one my friend made.

DJ – thanks for their website.

  7. Wonderful folks from Slovenia. Brilliantly upbeat, and very proud of their country that has been independent only since June 25, 1991. As a friend of mine from there said “We can go skiing and lay on the beach in the same day, you should come visit!”

  8. Yes, Slovenia does rock and the people here are just fantastic. Having lived here for going on seven years I am amazed that I have never heard of this ensemble before. They are very, very good. Guess I will have to start visiting Ljubljana more often.

Thanks Mojca for bringing this to my attention.

  9. Hello everybody, this is Mojca.
I finally have time to reply (I hope it’s not too late and somebody besides Jonco will read this).

Let me start by saying: Jonco, thank your for posting Africa (but I didn’t expect you to post my email too, I almost had a heart attack).
You (and everybody who submited comment) made entire choir very very happy. We love what we do – I guess you can tell – and we want to share it with others. You enabled us that. Thank you.

To everybody who says people in Slovenia are handsome: Yes we are :)I know several American guys who say that girls are extremely pretty. Richard & DJ: girls you liked read what you wrote, I don’t know what they thought of it though, I can let you know 🙂 Bill: many girls are single, so get your passport (there’s good beer and wine too)…

Tim: I’ll suggest it to others. We like chalenges.

Don: PRIDI NAZAJ V LJUBLJANO, NE BO TI ZAL, TE POVABIM NA PIVO

Tim (other Tim?): you can not get mp3, we haven’t recorded that song yet 🙂 but our CD (which will include Africa) will be out on October 1st so I guess you can get it then (btw, DVD from this concert will also be out at that time).

DJ: we do BBQs, birthdays, weddings, you name it…we won’t even charge you, but you do have to take care of airplane tickets and accomodation 🙂 do we have a deal?

KLAW: I suggest the other way around – if it’s ok with you. Jonco already has my email address so he can give it to you, ok?

Gary: unfortunately we do not plan US tour. We spent three weeks in Latin America last year but it took more than a year to prepare the tour (airplane tickets, accommodations,…). But with a sponsor I think we might do it in 2010. So if anybody knows somebody really rich who would help us a bit, let me know 🙂

Sander: I’m in the first row, on the right (your right) from the girl in yellow. I have dark hair and dark T-shirt so it’s hard to see me, except at the end (after the concert I saw a photo from the concert, realized I looked boring and decided to dye my hair orange)

To everybody: thank you for all your good wishes! We will continue to make people happy so don’t forget to check what we do every now and then!

    • Mojca,
I wanted to share your email with the B&P readers because I think they understood it better as I did. Continued success in the future, my friend. Thanks for sharing your beautiful music. Keep us informed of new performances.

  11. Your music is amazing. I love percussion type music but this is something that I have never seen. Your group performs with percision. I would love to purchase your CD or DVD when it is available. Do you know what it will be called? I see that Mojca said it will be recorded in October and Africa will be included on the CD? I guess that is October 2009? Best of everything to all of you. I can tell you enjoy what you do. I direct a bell choir and music is always a joy to me.
