I don't know why. I have a lot of small dogs and try to use the most friendly but effective products because of them. Listerine does work when I spray it around the patio (even on ants) and will not harm them. I use straight vinegar to kill weeds and I rub bounce sheets on their backs if there is an outbreak of black flies or nits and both these work well too. It indeed works very well, though they do have to reapply it fairly often. Thankfully they use the cheap Listerine. But it does help that is for sure. And smells nice to boot.
