I love that I saw pics of people lighting homes with candles, and crowds of people carrying candles thru the streets in Europe.
Yeah, burning candles. That should help a lot - DOH!

It probably wasted more energy powering the lights back up than it ever could have saved. I'm sure no difference was made, just some shower-needing granola crunchers felt better for a while.

Another fine example of the coming new Fascism. Earth Hour reminds of the Pink Floyd song "SHEEP".

Damn, I forgot how ugly Shemp was but he was the best Stooge.

PaulV and Kelly, you are truly amazing and 100% correct.
Some people are trying to make a statement but it's not
even close to what is needed to help the environment.
It's basically a power surge in the bump of life.

this is pretty much the dumbest thing of all time. some idealist vision that saves a minuscule amount of energy once a year (maybe 1 hundredth of 1 percent of energy usage for the lightbulbs affected) but does nothing long term, congratulations, you accomplished nothing. the amount of energy used to recycle goods such as paper or aluminum is huge... spend the dollars on something that will make a slight difference, one weekend credit towards replacing incandescent bulbs for energy efficient ones, get a major retailer to give a discount if you provide your own cloth bags. claiming you're trying to make a difference when your end result is clearly going to be nothing makes me wonder who is getting the check on the back end.

Earth hour sucks, because people change the load on the power grid by a large amount instantaneously. Then some generators go into idle mode, but not before a surge. And the opposite happens at the end of the hour.

I think a more reasonable approach would be an earth month. Or an earth decade. Oh wait, we will have that soon when the coal and oil runs out. LOL
